Responsibility in Tile Installations: A Professional Perspective

I have 36 years in this trade, and the issue of responsibility in situations like this can be resolved with objectivity.
I’d like to share the approach I’ve used throughout my entire career.
When a client is looking for a lower price, many times they choose to purchase the material themselves, since there are many stores where you don’t need to be a contractor to buy tile.
When I’m contacted under this scenario and the client tells me that the material has already been purchased and that they only need labor, the first thing I ask is whether the tile is physically at the property.
There are usually two answers: some already have it at home, and others do not.
In both cases, it is my professional responsibility to advise and help prevent problems.
If the client already has the material in their garage, I recommend that they verify all boxes match in lot number, shade, and caliber, since that responsibility belongs to the client—unless they request that we inspect every box, which involves an additional cost.
If the material is still at the store and the client asks us to pick it up, they are informed that this service has a cost, because it is no longer just about driving and unloading the material at their garage. In this scenario, the contractor assumes full responsibility for transportation from point A to point B, which involves risks such as theft and transportation damage.
Additionally, when picking up the material, we are responsible for:
Verifying that the boxes are not damaged
Detecting boxes that have been re-packaged due to returns (which is very common)
Confirming that all numbers and letters match on every box
Failing to do this inevitably leads to problems.
Even after all of the above, it is still the contractor’s responsibility to ensure the material is free of defects. Many shade variations do not become evident until after grouting, which is why performing a dry layout before installation is mandatory.
Experienced contractors know these issues happen frequently. That is why we purchase from specialized tile stores, where there is greater control and a clear focus on selling tile and tile installation products only.

Now, too many get into it just to pay bills, no pride, no care for detail. They rush it, cover it, and call it done.

We grew up in this. This trade has been part of our life since we were kids. We still take pride in every job, even if the market now pushes for speed over quality.

We won’t lie, times have changed. The world moves fast, and trades like ours feel it too. But we still treat this like a craft… not just a paycheck.
