With all of the recent discussion about the SSPX, it occurred to me that my own experiences from those early years might actually be of historical interest.
As a teenager, I attended St. Pius V School in Wantagh, New York while it was still part of the SSPX, before the SSPV even existed. Fr. Clarence Kelly was my pastor, and Fr. Donald Sanborn had just recently been ordained when he became my Latin teacher. Before that, I attended Ave Maria Chapel in Westbury during my early years in the traditional Catholic movement.
At the time, I was just a kid. I had no idea that the people around me or the events taking place would one day become part of church history. Looking back almost fifty years later, it’s interesting to realize that many people today only know about those days through books, articles, YouTube videos, or podcasts.
I found the attached photo online that is from that era. Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre is in the center. Fr. Clarence Kelly is on the left, and Fr. Donald Sanborn is on the right. Seeing this photo brings back a lot of memories.
Life took me in a completely different direction after that. I spent decades in Evangelical Christianity before eventually becoming Orthodox.
If anyone who produces YouTube content, podcasts, or historical content thinks my firsthand memories from those early SSPX days would be worthwhile, I’d be happy to share what I remember. I’m not interested in stirring up old arguments or taking sides. I simply remember what it was like to be there, and if those memories help preserve a small piece of history, I’d be glad to share them.

Real estate observation:
Weekday Home Depot = contractors.
Saturday Home Depot = homeowners.
Both groups are convinced they’ll only be there for “a few minutes.”

Most Americans have never sat in an Afghan tea shop listening to ordinary Muslims talk about faith, family, culture, and life.
One thing I learned after years living in Afghanistan: common people do not always describe their religion the same way scholars, debaters, or internet personalities do.
That’s true in Christianity too.
A lot of my future videos will focus on the difference between textbook religion and lived religion.
