Save Bathiya Tusker
Latest detailed update on Bathiya the injured tusker...
📅 July 6 – Army Steps In
Bathiya, treated since late May for a gunshot wound to his front right leg, had fallen into a water pit near Manigama (Nikaweratiya) and struggled to stay above water.
Sri Lanka Army, including the 15ᵗʰ Artillery and 9ᵗʰ National Guard, secured the site, cooled him with water, erected shade, built a sand mound to support his head, and assisted wildlife officers in rescue operations.
📅July 5 – Condition Worsened
Veterinary teams discovered that antibiotics and feeding assistance weren’t enough; Bathiya developed difficulty feeding himself independently.
Environment Minister Dhammika Patabendi and Deputy Anton Jayakody visited, emphasizing the need for urgent treatment based on scan and blood test results.
📅July 7–8 – Signs of Improvement, Mobile Hospital Planned
By July 7, Bathiya showed slight movement in his injured leg—seen as a “glimmer of hope.” A veterinary team led by Prof. Ashoka Dangolla continued care.
The government announced plans to build a mobile wildlife hospital and treatment unit specifically for elephants
📅July 10–12 – Ongoing Critical Care
A detailed report from Ceylon Today described Bathiya’s grim condition: collapsed in muddy water, suffering wounds to his leg, head, and ear, and signs of chronic wasting disease. A multidisciplinary veterinary team—including specialists from Peradeniya and consultants from Germany and Thailand—is administering continuous treatment.
Army units, wildlife officers, and locals have collaborated to maintain water levels, stabilize Bathiya using sandbags, deploy a crane for positioning, and run round-the-clock care
▶️ Summary & Next Steps
Current status: Still in critical condition, but there are small signs of responsiveness. Treatment continues.
Support systems: Army, wildlife conservation department, veterinary experts, and locals are united in rescue efforts.
Innovation: Plans for a dedicated mobile hospital could revolutionize care for injured wild elephants.
Challenges: Uncertainty about disease diagnosis (possible chronic wasting) and long-term prognosis. Full recovery remains uncertain.
✅ In Summary
Bathiya remains in a precarious state but benefits from coordinated, resilient care. The introduction of mobile medical units and army-supported rescue frameworks gives hope. The next critical step is diagnosing the chronic condition and sustaining treatment.
