mudwing headcanons no one asked for

all mudwings have a big inflatable sack of skin extending from their chin to where their chest starts, and mudwings can fill this sack full with emergency air, enabling them to breathe underwater for up to an hour! this sack will expand and glow bright orange when a mudwing is charging up their firebreath, and excess smoke can be released through the slits on their necks, which can open and close to prevent foreign materials from entering their bodies.

all mudwings descend from two subspecies of the mudwing species, the draco canis variation and the canis crocdilianus variation. the crocodilian subspecies is vastly more common, and make up 90% of the mudwing population. only members of the royal family and a handful of outliers are of the canine subspecies. fireproof mudwings do have an increased chance of having visible canine genes in them, though it is still fleetingly rare in non-royal mudwings.

crocodilian mudwings have big, heavy talons and thick tails, though they are more stout than their canine counterparts. their jaws tend to be longer, knobblier and lined with uneven teeth, making it easier for them to hunt alligators and crocodiles. the method this subspecies of mudwing uses to hunt is first clamping the jaw of the alligator/crocodile shut using their own stronger jaws, and flipping the reptile upside-down and into the mud/water where it's being hunted. the mudwing will then wrench its head forward to start snapping the jaw of the reptile in half. the mudwing will then take its head out of the mud/water and hold the reptile under until it dies.

canine mudwings are taller and more lean, with more uniform, but incredibly strong and durable jaws. these mudwings can take more weight than a crocodilian mudwing, and can flop their ears to ward off any swamp insects such as dragonflies or caddisflies. they are also much quicker on their talons. these mudwings hunt by dragging the chosen prey out of the mud/water where it lays by its tail, and flying up high and throwing it into a nearby rock or tree. this stuns the animal long enough for the mudwing to dive and tear into the reptile's stomach. there have been cases where the reptile is split open upon impact, due to it being old and frail or just generally weak.
