I confess: at first, I fell for it too.

CNN, MS Now and Politico this morning filed suit in DC District Federal Court to block Trump’s move to ban them from the White House and presumably restrict them from covering presidential events wherever access is required.

It’s a mistake. As I explain in today’s Countdown Podcast, that suit is exactly what Trump wanted. It’s his last chance at staving off MAGA disaster at the midterms, the loss of the House and almost certainly the Senate.

Trump was picking ANOTHER fight, and CNN, MS NOW and Politico fell for it. He picked a fight with Canada – and lost. He picked a fight with the E-U – and lost. He picked a fight over Greenland – and lost. He picked a fight over Iran – and he’s losing, slowly, and painfully, and with real death and no real way out.

He wants a fight. He needs a fight. He needs a fight with an easy target, to wake up his base. Because in the last week a Republican Assistant House Whip in the middle of a tough re-election campaign debuted a commercial which is just her attacking Trump. Because in the last week he was scolded by…Pat Boone. Because the midterms are going so badly they have the Vice President campaigning for the incumbent Republican Senator in a state that hasn’t elected a Democrat since 1932.

He's lost the House. He’s losing the Senate. He’s losing the economy. He’s losing Iran. He is desperate. He only knows how to punch down and what he wants is what he’s always wanted: some impotent opponent that most of America hates, to try to fight back.

That’d be the news media.

I know this is a tough task for our political scoop newsboys and newsgirls, but the correct action is to do nothing. Mail in your response. Turn the other cheek. Again. For the 4000th time. Ignore this from Trump – God knows you’ve ignored it from Trump for 11 years.

Ignore it for two months. AFTER the midterms? After the metaphorical carnage that will either give the Democrats the House and cut him and his Reich off from most federal money, or give the Democrats the House and the Senate and so FREEZE his dictatorship… AFTER November 3rd?

THEN ask him about his insanity. THEN ask him which he has: dementia or Alzheimer’s. THEN ask him if after the nation repudiated him, when he plans to resign. THEN stage the expulsions. THEN have him get sued by every news organization in America. THEN have Peter Baker give him the finger. THEN unleash the pent-up rage at Trump urinating daily on the Constitution, taring hourly at the fabric of this nation’s history. Or at least unleash the pent-up rage at Trump for inconveniencing you so much.

Trump banned CNN and MS NOW and Politico because he wants the kind of 1st Amendment, Constitutional Crisis, America Must Choose moment that he would win.

As I said, I fell for it too. He said “we took the freedom of speech away” like he was talking about another tariff… and I immediately thought: here is where you draw the line. Another reporter must challenge him, when he insults them they must insult him WORSE… he says “you’re the fake news” and the reporter, from ABC or The Times says “you’re mentally ill and unqualified to remain as president.” Meet me at the barricades. Organize staged expulsions. THIS reporter calls him insane and then THAT reporter calls him a dictator and then THE OTHER reporter compares him to Hitler. That’s today. Then tomorrow, a fourth reporter asks about his plans to subvert the midterms and a fifth…

Nope.

CNN? Politico? Do what you do best: Cower in the face of bullying. Stick to the mantra. And to the place I essentially molded from the punch-line of American cable into its present form, MS NOW? Stick to your recent mantra – MSNBC Later.

HIATUS: forgive my tardiness in posting what I detailed in the May 11 episode - I've put the podcast on hiatus while I deal with a comparatively minor heart issue ("comparatively" is doing a lot of heavy lifting here, which is good because frankly I can't). It's Atrial Fibrillation and it was intermittent and infrequent until very recently. Now we have to do a surgical intervention early in June.

OTOH I'm told to expect to be thrown out of the hospital within six hours of arrival so most of my worries are logistical and recovery-oriented. They don't expect complications and they do expect the resolution of a lot of drags on my energy levels. The resumption of the podcast should be doable well before the end of June.

MAYBE they won't destroy the world before I get back. If not I hope you enjoyed Nancy Faust on the organ.
