Manchester Debating Union
Hello! We are the MDU, the Manchester Debating Union, which encompasses all university debating based in Manchester. Since we were founded in 1996, we have grown to be one of the UK’s most active debating societies. Becoming a member of the MDU grants you the opportunity to actively participate in university life. This is our Official YouTube Channel.
We are primarily based at the University of Manchester, and accept members from all of Manchester’s institutions of higher education. Our goal is to open up debate and public speaking to everyone. We want as many people as possible to get the chance to see great public speaking and learn how to express their own ideas.
We organise the participation of Manchester students in inter-varsity debating competitions, arrange public debates, and host our own competitions at university and school level. We teach people how to speak in public, form persuasive arguments, and see issues from all sides.

We are back with a bonus session of the MDU Advanced Training series! This time accompanied by a fundraiser in support of Ukraine and the people of Ukraine, who are facing a serious humanitarian crisis as a result of an unprovoked war of aggression.
We understand that not everyone is in the financial position to donate, so the session will be, as before, open to everyone and free to attend. However, for everyone who can, we will be launching a fundraiser that will be open ahead and during the event—any amount, no matter how big or small, can go a long way and will be greatly appreciated!

After consultation with Ukrainian debaters and friends, we have decided to distribute all donations raised among the following organisations:
i) People In Need Ukrainian Emergency Appeal (a non-profit focused on providing immediate humanitarian aid to those affected by the war);
ii) Direct Relief (an organisation that is working directly with Ukraine’s Ministry of Health and other partners in the region to provide requested medical aid);
iii) Kyiv Independent (a media outlet seeking to provide independent and high-quality local reporting from Ukraine);
The workshop itself will be on the topic of Politics and how to debate it - come along if you want to learn how to analyse countries and internal politics in a nuanced way and maybe add some spicy new principles into your casefile! After the workshop, we will aim to also organise a spar debate and secure high-quality judges for each room.
The session will be delivered by some familiar faces from previous advanced trainings (Jacklin & Lucie) but also several super-special guests (Matt Caito, Naomi Panovka & Hadar Goldberg, who are all wonderful and will tell you very smart things).
We hope to see everyone again in support of a good cause.
