Ever thought of going away to live on a tropical island? I did, so I left everything and moved to the Philippines!
In 2011, I did a lot of thinking about what I wanted to truly do the rest of my life. I've never been a "travel person" up until that point. I'd only been to border towns along northern Mexico for short vacations and visits.
But then in California, I met a wonderful Filipina who jump-started my interest in the Philippines. So by 2012, I was on a plane to explore the Philippines and I've been here ever since. My plans are to continue seeing more of SouthEast Asia and eventually settle down 'somewhere'. Maybe. :)
Follow me on my journey as I share tips on how to travel safely, the places I visit and observations on a variety of cultures. I hope you'll find it both entertaining and informative.

I do have a question. For someone with less than $100,000 to invest, How would you recommend we enter the market.. I'm looking to study some traders and copy their strategy rather than investing myself and losing money emotionally. What's your take on this approach???

a few things, as i've been investing since 1999..
first, there is longterm investing and then there are "traders". statistics have shown repeatedly for years that most traders, bouncing in/out of the market lose money.
the most profitable approach is to buy and hold good assets (which you research online first). do not be so quick to trust any internet guru. many will recommend an investment to drive up the price and then sell it off. (known as a pump and dump)
i'd suggest something somewhat safe, like the S&P500, which has modest returns over time. you can purchase the S&P500 through an investment bank like Fidelity, Schwab, or Chase.

things i would not recommend right now are; gold/silver, small-cap crypto (stick with the top-10).
listen to a variety of investment analysts, not just one. check out www.fool.com/ as a start.
"not financial advice. any investment comes with risk. research any investment before making purchase."

I agree with most of your comments but one fact I don’t agree with is; if a Filipino accuses a foreigner of anything they will take the Filipinos word over the foreigner. That’s not due process my friend. I.e., if an expat sleeps with a local and then tries to move on, she can simply claim rape or sexual harassment and the expat is deemed guilty. Not a fair system.

all things being equal, same occurs in the usa. women claiming rape two months after a date/hookup. then their attorney is willing to drop it, "for a settlement". no way i'd ever date in the states.
so much for due process.

I've been riding motorcycles for 50 years in the USA. I decided to buy a new Honda PCX 160 in 2023. Several people including foreigners were killed within a month of my buying my bike. I parked it under a shelter and covered it up. It has 45 kilometers on it. Its not worth the risk. I'm gonna put it on facebook. I bought a Ford Ranger, added front and rear cameras and hire a driver.
Operating a motorcycle in the west is not the same here. It doesnt matter how much experience you have. Locals operate carelessly with no fear of having an accident. Until they do...

i don't blame you at all. we're looking at getting a car once we settle down.
even being very careful, you are constantly surrounded by drivers who are either 14-years old (no helmet) or adults who never spent a minute in a driver's education class. zero understanding of safe merging, safe passing, right of way, etc.

50 % are separated beware
Reply
@Lifebeyondthesea
not 50% of all filipinas. not even 50% of the married filipinas. the actual amount is 1.9% according to the most recent census.
"The PSA said the same trend was observed for those divorced or separated or annulled, which was at 1.9 percent in 2020, up from 1.5 percent in 2015."
your estimate of 50% is way off.

As someone who has flown back and forth to the Philippines many, many times on business, everyone needs to listen to Reekay. Use a reputable airline and pay extra to fly direct. If you are in the US and are worried about potentially needing to get a refund, you can book your ticket through a US airline. United flies to Manila and Cebu, Delta will fly you to the Philippines on Korean Air and American will use JAL for the last leg. Don't cheap out!!!!

taking a cheap-flight through central-china is the WORST decision i ever made when traveling. i can't begin to describe what a horrible, stressful, experience it was. myself and six others.. we kept telling each other, "if we can only get to Shanghai, we'll be okay." worst flight ever.
NEVER fly through central China on China Southern or China Eastern airlines.

i have a few that i compare each trip. lately i've been using EVA, which does a 4-hour layover in Taipei. but i also like KoreanAir, layover at Incheon. CathayPacific is good too, i think my last layover there was HK.
while Qatar is very nice, they do their layovers at Doha.. which adds hours to any flight, turning it into a marathon.
