The Whole Equation

An educational channel about the art and business of film. We aim to tell the whole story from the zoetrope to Netflix.

You can't say as much in a film as you can in writing, but what you can say, you can say with great conviction'

-Robert J. Flaherty

I make film essays which attempt to join the dots between diverse areas of the movie business. I'm interested in the whole history of filmmaking and have essays planned on Orson Welles, Preston Sturges, The Coen Brothers, Francis Ford Coppola, Hayao Miyazaki, Pixar, Netflix, Quentin Tarantino and more.

The Whole Equation

I've had a few comment recently asking if there will be any more videos. The answer unfortunately is an unsatisfying, not at the moment. I am not actively working on this channel. The reasons are many, partially I have moved onto other projects, partially its because I lost faith in what I was putting out and my ideas. There is also the fact that post-lockdown, I don't have the time to invest the tens/hundreds of hours that I was putting into making these videos. If you are interested in what I'm doing now its not film related, but I have a podcast on my other big passion aside from film, the history of science:

I'd just like to thank everyone who supported the channel and encouraged me. It meant a lot at a difficult time. I hope that people still revisit the videos and enjoy them for what they are.

All the best,

Interesting results from the poll last weekend where a majority of the subscribers chose the Coen Brothers as the filmmakers which they would most like to see a video on. I was already working on a video on the Coens which is much bigger in scope than anything I have worked on before, potentially split into three parts. However, because of this it may not be ready until early next year.

In the meantime I will keep trying to post and interact here. I'd love to build a little community, maybe a discord server and whatnot.

Until then keep watching the screens!

I am curious about the tastes of my subscribers. Which filmmaker would you prefer to see the next video on? (I am making no guarentees that the next video will be on this director, in fact I know what the next video will be, I am just curious).

Thanks to all my new subscribers this month. I have been taking some time off and reassessing what I would do next on this channel. I have plans for three new videos, though each may take a long period of research and editing. Hope that people stick around because I have some really exciting ideas.

In the meantime if you feel like it I have a link to my new Patreon:

If this builds up I can maybe spend more time on these videos!

Apologies everyone if the channel has been a bit slow to upload recently. I aim for a video at least every 2 months but that doesn't always happen. I have two videos (Tarantino and early sound films) at an advance stage but gone back to the drawing board on both of them. My aim is to keep quality high, rather than to a fixed schedule. Hopefully I will have 2/3 new videos out by the end of August.

All the best and stay safe!

So its been a year since I started the channel. I've enjoyed making my videos a lot, they've made what could have been a crappy year substantially better.

Looking forward to the next year!

I've started a Letterboxd account. Unfortunately I doubt I will have much time to write reviews at the moment.

However, if you are curious what I have been watching and my ratings:
