On February 1, 2003, the Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated during re-entry over Texas, killing all seven astronauts aboard. It was one of the most tragic days in the history of human spaceflight.
The crew of STS-107 included Commander Rick Husband, Pilot William McCool, Mission Specialists Kalpana Chawla, David Brown, Laurel Clark, Michael Anderson, and Payload Specialist Ilan Ramon, the first Israeli astronaut. They had spent 16 days in orbit conducting groundbreaking scientific experiments that spanned biology, physics, and Earth observation. #NeverForget
The tragedy was caused by a chunk of insulating foam that broke off during launch and struck the shuttle’s left wing. This created a breach in the heat shield, which allowed superheated gases to enter the wing structure during re-entry, leading to the vehicle's destruction.🕊️🚀
