In this episode we discuss the essay of the same name by Daniel Belgrad. His thesis is that the Gnostic worldview, in which our world is the product of a hostile creator god (the Demiurge) and the forces of good and evil are locked in an eternal struggle, is embedded in the philosophy and musical structure of the metal genre. The writer cites the authors J.R.R. Tolkien and Dennis Wheatley as major literary influences for this worldview as it appears within the artistic expression of heavy metal. We also talk about the early days of Black Sabbath, weaponized toxic culture, the "heavy metal dialectic" and more!
