We provide mental health and learning disability care to 464,000 people predominantly living in Stoke on Trent and in North Staffordshire, delivery services through six clinical Directorates; Adult Mental Health Inpatient, Adult Mental Health Community, Substance Misuse, Learning Disabilities, Neuro and Old Age Psychiatry and Children and Young People's Services.
We work from over 30 hospital and community based premises; our main site is Harplands Hospital and provides the setting for most of our inpatient units. Corporate staff are based in Trentham.
We provide services to people of all ages with a wide range of mental health and learning disability needs. Sometimes our service users need to spend time in hospital, however, we are often able to provide care in outpatient/community settings and in people’s homes.

On 1 July, 3pm, North Staffordshire Combined Healthcare NHS Trust opened its 'Peace Pod', a multifunctional enhanced support suite at the Darwin Centre. The suite is the first of its kind in the UK and, with a calm and inviting atmosphere, will provide a safe space for patients to manage higher intensity presentations, reduce the length of stay and avoid admissions to PICU (psychiatric intensive care unit)/SEDU (specialist eating disorder unit).

Two weeks ago, our Engagement@Combined event took place for 2025. The event saw a large range of stakeholders, local organisation and partners attend to give their feedback on the trust's Quality Account and provided an overview of some of the key areas of the organisation. The event also gave an opportunity for attendees to share their feedback on areas of focus for the upcoming year and provided a space for networking and key conversations. Combined Healthcare is part way through its capital investment programme, known as Project Chrysalis, to eradicate dormitory accommodation across the inpatient wards at Harplands Hospital.
The changes will further enhance the inpatient facilities and improve the privacy and dignity arrangements for the patients. Project Chrysalis also provides a modern, state-of-the-art working environment for staff.
Project Chrysalis continues to progress on Ward 2 and the work has been positively received. The updates and changes have provided many benefits to service users and staff and this is reflected in their complimentary feedback for the works already completed.
Combined Healthcare has released a progress update video of the developments so far. The video captures comments and observations from staff on their experience of the new facilities and highlights the partnership with Interclass, a Midlands-based construction company which is delivering the work.
Lucy Walton and Lucy Didcote, ward managers of Ward 1 and Ward 3 respectively, have expressed how modern, open, airy and bright the new facilities are. They comment on how the communal spaces are more open and accessible for patients and how the en-suite bathrooms provide more privacy and dignity.
