In 2018, the Supreme court of Pakistan ordered an investigation related to the number of illegal housings societies in Pakistan. Findings of the investigative report revealed that 5492 housing societies were unregistered, illegal or established on paper, with no on-ground development. Compared to illegal housing societies, the number of registered and licensed housing schemes stood at a mere 3,432.
The report also revealed that most housing societies made several changes to the built-up area present on paper without any permission from the relevant authorities. Some housing societies had sold the area designated for parks and graveyards as residential or commercial plots.
Keeping in mind the state of illegal housing societies in Pakistan, it is crucial that investors, especially first-time homebuyers, carry out property verification, which will determine the legal status of a given property. This will help potential property buyers steer clear of dubious marketing practices or fraudulent housing schemes.
