Rants about history, fashion, and art from a girl who makes clothes based on armor.

Lorica Clothing

Many of you discovered my channel through my first Grand Cathay video, so when Warhammer: The Old World revealed new Cathay models last week, I figured I ought to make a part two! This time I focus more closely on the Chinese folklore which may have inspired a few of the new units.

In the weeks to come, there will be more Forging Content, and more video essays (next up: Textile Science, my latest fixation). I hope you enjoy!

Thanks so much for watching, y'all. :)

Hey friends! As you may have noticed, these Forging recordings will be coming out at a nice regular clip -- I'm aiming for every Monday at 10 am til the well runs dry. I hope you're enjoying them!

But if you miss my regular style of video essay, never fear, my yaps will be returning soon! Games Workshop released a few more units for Grand Cathay, so you know I gotta get in there and have A Mildly Informed Opinion™. I have also found myself incensed about textile science recently, so expect a rant about what the internet gets wrong about fabric quality once I get my notes together.

As ever, thanks so much for watching! So thrilled to have you here. :)

Hello friends! I FINALLY got this game review video out after repeatedly missing the deadline for two months -- it's honestly a relief to be deeply behind but finished. (; Hope you all enjoy a long yap about color, art history, and typography in a lil indie game called Songs of Silence!

Per my last post, I still have a lot of content from The Forging to catch up on. I'll be putting up armor lectures and interviews with some of today's finest American armorsmiths in the weeks to come, god willin and the crick don't rise.

In the meantime, let me know what you'd like to see next! More game reviews? More history? Some fashion perhaps? Let me know!

Hello friends! It's been a busy summer -- I just got back from The Forging, a four day event over Labor Day weekend where some of the finest armorers in the U.S. got together to share knowledge, demonstrate techniques, and generally nerd out about armor. Over the next couple weeks I plan to release a few videos about the experience, including interviews I recorded with the likes of Robert Macpherson, Jeff Wasson, Wade Allen, Patrick Thaden, Don Halter, and Dave Wise. Keep an eye out!

In the meantime, the next video I have cookin is a review of a lil indie game called Songs of Silence. I rarely see games evaluated from a visual design, art direction, and UX perspective, so I figure I'm just the gal to fill the gap. :) We’ll investigate how the visual approach of a game elevates the experience of playing it. How does everything from character art to color palette support storytelling? How do details like typography and menu design impact playability?

Keep an eye out, fun stuff coming soon!

Oof, so much for posting video through July, huh?

I've spent the last three weeks studying under a master tailor in Ireland. It's such privilege to be a student again, where my only focus is improving with every stitch. I hope to use what I've learned in my fashion practice to bring my armor-inspired couture ideas to life!

I thought I would have plenty of time in the evenings and on the weekends to work on videos, but I find I've an alarming brain cell shortage after practicing hand and machine sewing for six hours a day. I don't think I'll have the bones for a really rigorous topic til I get back home in August, but would you all be interested in a little "get to know me" chatty video, which is much more manageable? Why is the channel named Lorica Clothing? How does this random chick know anything about armor? I'm happy to share, but don't want to bore you to tears talking about myself. Let me know, and never fear, there will be more history and design chats to come regardless. :)

Hello friends, glad to see the warm reception of the Regional Armor video! That took several weeks of research, writing, and editing to pull together, so I hope you won't be too disappointed if my next few videos are a bit "lighter" both for my sanity and time. :) I'll be spending a month abroad this summer studying under a Saville Row tailor, so while I hope to still post a few more videos through July, they will be quite a bit less academic and more centered on my fashion and art practice. I'll get back to the armor stuff in August, don't you worry, just will have to take a bit of a break while I focus on my studies.

Thanks so much for being here, I'm so thrilled to have you along!

Hey friends! I've been diligently working on the next video, which will attempt to define and describe regional armor styles in late 15th century Europe (from my previous polls it seems like y'all are actually excited to learn about weirdly specific armor nonsense? It appears we may all, in fact, be nerds here).

However, surprising literally no one but my god complex, this topic has turned out to be incredibly expansive, and it needs a little more time in the oven to do justice. So instead, I'll be posting a short little video called "How to Study Armor" tomorrow (and will try to finish Regional Armor for next week). It was actually part of the introduction of the Regional Armor video, but I felt it was slowing down the pace. I think separating it out as its own piece will highlight the good stuff while keeping the other video more focused.

Anyways, look forward to more Armor Esoterica coming your way, these are the consequences of your actions. :)

So glad you all enjoyed the Elves and Dwarves video! :) My apologies that it was even later than estimated, all those Ken Burns zooms and citations take me foreverrrr

But speaking of delays -- I'll be traveling for the next two weeks, so my next video will likely be coming at the end of May. But never fear, I fully plan to spend a copious amount of time at the Louvre and Musée de l'Armée, scoping out all the best armor France has to offer. :)

I have a few ideas mulling around, inspired by this trip, so let me know what you'd be interested in seeing!

1. Why I honestly really don't care for the Balenciaga armor collection
2. How to identify regional styles of armor across XV century Europe
3. An armor tourism vlog ✨

Thanks everyone!

Hey friends! This lil update is undoubtedly vastly overestimating the extent to which anyone cares about my release schedule, but I fear this week I'm going to have to delay posting til Monday. I'm trying to uphold the "every other Friday" cadence as best I can, but I'm rather behind from battling a cold recently, and am not yet enough of a content creation machine that I have backups ready to go. Look forward to learning about the intersection of Folklore and Art History (why does Art Deco look like it was made by dwarves, and Art Nouveau like it was made by elves?) early next week!

Hey all, I'm so chuffed to see the Cathay video bringing in so many new friends -- welcome!

Now, I love making video game / miniature reviews, but I do want to caution y'all that that's not all I do -- I hope you aren't disappointed if another style of video pops up on your feed from me! That said, here are the four-ish genres of videos I anticipate making as time goes on. Feel free to indicate your preferences, because while I have my own vision, it's helpful to know what you're looking forward to, as well!

1. Armor Esoterica -- Deep dives into armor as art, fashion, and military technology.
2. Art History -- How visual movements of the past shape the visual language of our present.
3. Pop Media Reviews -- Analyzing video games, films, and other visual media to discuss how design shapes narrative.
4. Lorica Lore -- More about me and how / why I make clothes that look like armor. Design concepts, behind the scenes, and sneak peeks.

Thanks so much for watching everyone, hope you'll stick around for more!
