May is #HighBloodPressureMonth!
#highbloodpressuretips
1. Talk to your healthcare provider about what your numbers mean for you at every visit.
2. Choosing and preparing foods that are lower in salt and sodium may help prevent or lower high blood pressure. Food labels can help you decide which foods to choose.
3. Understand your personal risk for high blood pressure. While some risk factors—like unhealthy lifestyle habits—can be changed, other risk factors cannot—like age, family history and genetics, race and ethnicity, and sex.
4. It's important to know how to properly check your blood pressure to get the most accurate results. Knowing and tracking your numbers is an important step to managing high blood pressure.
5. Long-term stress may contribute to heart problems such as high blood pressure. Taking time to feel gratitude may improve your emotional well-being by helping you cope with stress.
6. Millions of people have high blood pressure and don’t know it. High blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart disease. Have your blood pressure checked at each healthcare provider visit, write it down and talk to your provider about ways to control it and what it means for your risk for heart disease.
7. Taking steps like eating healthy, getting regular physical activity, managing stress, getting enough sleep, not smoking, and aiming for a healthy weight can help keep blood pressure and our heart healthy.
8. Everyone should know their blood pressure numbers. Talk to your provider about what your numbers are, how often you should have yours checked and if you should self-monitor.
9. High blood pressure is often called the "silent killer" because you can’t generally feel if you have it. But you may have warning signs that you write off as stress. Have your blood pressure checked at every healthcare provider visit. Also, it is good to include self-measured blood pressure monitoring at home.
