Darshan of Lord Durga's Palki (Phoolpati) from Gorkha Durga Mandir is believed to be guided by Lord Durga herself. For those who cannot have darshan of the idol, the Palki offers a divine experience.
About Phoolpati.
Phoolpati is a significant part of the Dashain festival, especially in Nepal and among the Gurkha community. It is observed on the seventh day of Dashain, which is known as Saptami. The word "Phoolpati" is a combination of two Nepali words: "Phool" meaning flower and "Pati" meaning leaves. It involves the offering of sacred flowers, leaves, and plants that represent various deities.
Phoolpati Ritual:
1. Procession: Traditionally, in the Gorkha Durga Mandir, a grand procession is carried out where Phoolpati is brought from Gorkha to the Dashain Ghar of Kathmandu. It includes carrying sacred items like flowers, banana stalks, sugarcane, and other plants on a Palki (palanquin). This procession is believed to be guided by Lord Durga herself, which adds a divine and spiritual significance to the ritual.
2. Symbolism: The plants carried during Phoolpati symbolize the presence of Goddess Durga, who is invoked during Dashain. The belief is that even if someone cannot visit the temple or have darshan of the actual idol of the goddess, witnessing or participating in the Phoolpati procession is considered equally auspicious.
3. Belief: The Palki or the palanquin carrying the Phoolpati is believed to move on its own under the divine influence of Goddess Durga. This creates an aura of spiritual reverence among devotees, as the presence of the goddess is felt through this ceremonial event.
4. Celebration Across Communities: While this tradition is rooted in Nepal, it is also observed by the Gurkhas in India, including in areas like Shillong and other parts of the Gurkha diaspora. Phoolpati brings communities together, symbolizing unity, blessings, and the triumph of good over evil.
In essence, Phoolpati is not just a cultural ritual but a deep spiritual connection to the divine, particularly for devotees of Goddess Durga during Dashain.
