Tom Waits - Mule Variations
One of my favorite albums.
I love the inspiration at stated in the slides, but another tidbit that seems of Tom fashion involved destruction for art's sake.
The opening track, "Big in Japan," starts with a startling, explosive sound of a band collapsing into chaos. To create this effect years prior, Waits was staying in a hotel in Mexico with only a microcassette recorder. He turned it on and started screaming and violently beating a chest of drawers until it turned into kindling, trying to mimic the sound of a full, loud band by himself. He saved the cassette for years before finally using it to kick off the album.
