INTAN Indonesia was founded by a group of dedicated activists with a background in humanitarianism and community empowerment, who have extensive experience working with civil society organizations in Indonesia, particularly those focused on trans women's issues. The organization operates as a non-governmental foundation, officially incorporated on August 26, 2021, in Jakarta.

The establishment of INTAN Indonesia is driven by a recognition that many trans women in Indonesia remain vulnerable and marginalized, with their basic rights as citizens not being fully met, both in terms of economic, social, and cultural aspects, as well as civil and political rights. As a think tank and implementation organization focused on the empowerment of trans women, INTAN Indonesia remains committed to promoting full participation, equal opportunities, health, safety, and welfare for trans women and society as a whole in the economic, social, and cultural sectors, for all people throughout their lives.
