This April, we decided to design the #DailyBFAFilmQuiz differently.
Single-screen cinemas, once the beating heart of our city’s culture, are gradually vanishing from our streets. The month, the Daily BFA Film Quiz celebrates the culture of watching films in theatres and hence this quiz.
All these films are popular, but we want to remember the cinemas where they first released in Kolkata — many of which no longer exist today.
If you need a hint, look for clues in the Showhouse segment at www.bengalfilmarchive.com.
While we celebrate single screens, we also welcome everyone to share their memories of the cinema hall where they first watched these films.
What do you remember about the hall?
Does it still exist?
How was the experience?
April 1: Pather Panchali
A cinematic landmark. Can you name at least one of the three Kolkata halls where it first premiered? If you watched it in a single screen, tell us what you remember about the hall and if it’s still standing today!

Bengali cinema lost one of its most versatile voices this Sunday.
Bengal Film Archive honours the legacy of Rahul Arunodoy Banerjee through 10 roles that defined his trajectory.
He first shifted the industry’s romantic archetype as the vulnerable Krishna in Chirodini... Tumi Je Amar. He then captured modern urban drift as Joy in Bedroom and the dignity of a fading craft as Biswanath in Rupkatha Noy. His intellectual depth anchored Meghe Dhaka Tara as Anil and bridged history as Amitava in Jatiswar. He navigated the industry’s own cynicism as Vicky in Chotuskone and the heavy ethical weight of euthanasia as Subhro in Pupa. In Byomkesh Gotro, his Ajit became the essential emotional anchor for the franchise, while his Hukumchand in Rajlokhi O Srikanto grounded the narrative in raw folk-survival. Finally, his turn as Rakhal in The Academy of Fine Arts showcased a late-career mastery of grounded, cynical grit.
Rahul Banerjee leaves behind a filmography that remains essential to the archive of our times.
