European Defense

We are expanding our analytical network. Alongside European Defense, we are introducing a new channel: Latin Sentinel. Its focus is on the emerging defense capabilities of Latin American powers, with a strategic lens on Brazil’s rapid modernization, domestic defense industry growth, and naval and aerospace developments. This perspective offers valuable comparative insight when assessing global military trajectories from Europe to the South Atlantic and beyond.

If you are interested in understanding how rising regional powers shape the global security environment, you may find Latin Sentinel an informative complement to our European-focused content.

German MP Marcus Faber, who has just visited Kiev, said that only five of the 15 Pzh 2000 self-propelled howitzers that had been given to Ukraine were able to operate.
The reason is that the Ukrainian military used Pzh 2000... too much, leading to a series of irreparable damage on the battlefield. Mr. Faber said Ukraine is calling on Germany and the Netherlands to support more spare parts to bring 10 damaged self-propelled guns back into service.

USS Cowpens, CVL-25, one of nine light carriers built onto the hulls of incomplete Cleveland-class light cruisers. The idea came from President Roosevelt in 1941 as a way of getting extra carriers in service faster than the big Essex-class ships, which at that point weren't expected to become operational before 1944, and there were already a large number of Cleveland-class hulls under construction or planned. After Pearl Harbor nine such conversions were ordered, becoming the Independence-class light carriers, which could operate about 30 aircraft. Cowpens was first laid down as USS Huntington (CL-77) in November 1941, and commissioned in May 1943. She joined the Pacific campaigns in October 1943 and was with the Third/Fifth Fleet for the rest of the war. Cowpens went into reserve in 1946, being sold for scrap in 1959.

Satellite images show many destroyed planes at the apron and fortified mounds at Russia's Saki airport on the Crimean peninsula after the August 9 explosions. At least 3 Su-24M/MR and 3 Su-30 were destroyed in the yard, along with 3 Su-24M and one Su-30 in the parking lot.

Damage appeared to be concentrated in the aircraft hangar, while the ammunition depots at the base were still intact.

The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed that the explosion at the airport on the Crimean peninsula was caused by a burning ammunition depot, not by Ukrainian fire. Ukrainian officials have denied involvement in the incident, saying the explosions could have been caused by the carelessness of Russian forces or a guerrilla attack in Crimea.
