The Photographic Eye

Hi, I'm Alex!

After more than thirty years as a professional photographer, I created The Photographic Eye, an online community for photographers who want more than tutorials, gear talk, or anonymous likes.

This is a dedicated space for people who see photography as more than just taking pictures—it’s a passion, a creative outlet, and a lifelong journey. It’s for photographers who want thoughtful feedback, meaningful connections, and the chance to grow creatively alongside like-minded individuals. If you’ve ever felt isolated in your craft, uninspired by superficial platforms, or unsure how to improve, this community was built for you.

In The Photographic Eye, you’ll find a welcoming group of photographers ready to inspire, challenge, and support you as you develop your creative vision. Ready to join us? Learn more at www.skool.com/thephotographiceye.

Martin Parr has passed away aged 73

I haven't really covered him in any depth (to my shame) here on TPE, but Martin from About Photography sat and talked with Martin a few years back

The Photographic Eye

Quick update — 3 photographers have already secured their spot in the upcoming Confident Composition cohort, starting Saturday, November 1st.

If you’ve ever felt like your photos are hit-and-miss — one works, the next feels a little “off” — this program is designed to change that. Over 5 weeks, we’ll dive deep into the why behind strong images so you can stop relying on lucky shots and start creating with intention.

By the end, you’ll know exactly:

Why some photos grab you while others fall flat

How to compose images that feel powerful and balanced

How to trust your instincts and see the shot before you take it

This isn’t about memorizing rules. It’s about learning the language of photography — the skill that every great photographer relies on.

There are only 12 spots total, and 3 are already gone.

Howzit!

Just a quick note before the day ends:

Enrollment for The Photographer’s Compass closes at midnight tonight. After that, the doors close, and I shift my full focus to the group that’s coming together.

This isn’t a big course with thousands of people.
It’s small, personal, and designed for photographers who want something more in-depth.

Over the past fortnight, 70+ people have joined from around the world — and I’m already seeing the beginnings of something special in the group.

And this is before any of the modules are live!

So if you’ve been on the fence…

If your photography has felt a little directionless lately…

If you’re tired of just collecting tips and ready to reconnect with why you photograph in the first place…

👉 This is your last chance to join us for this round:
thephotographerscompassytf.carrd.co/

Here’s what a few photographers said after joining:

“I’m finally excited to pick up my camera again.”
“I’ve been missing this kind of creative energy.”
“This feels like a reset. It’s what I needed.”

The course is self-paced, but we’re all starting together this week - today!
The energy in the group is growing, and I’d love to welcome you.

After midnight tonight (midnight PST), enrollment will close.

Hope to see you inside.

Ever looked at your technically perfect photos and felt... nothing? 📸

I was editing my latest video about why some photos feel magical, and it hit me: We have the map, but we're missing the compass.

You know the feeling—sharp focus, perfect exposure, textbook composition. But the image could have been taken by anyone, anywhere. No soul, no story, no reason for existing beyond pressing the shutter.

The map tells you the rules. The compass tells you the direction.

Think about photographers like Olga Karlovac—her images aren't sharp, but they feel like fragments of memory. Or David Goldblatt's grainy mine photos that tell visceral stories no "perfect" shot could capture.

Here's the shift: Stop asking "How do I take this photo?" Start asking "Why should I take this photo?"

How many times have you stood with your camera, knowing exactly how to take a shot, but having no idea why you're taking it?

You're not alone. And you're not stuck there.

What you need isn't another technical tutorial. You need your compass—that sense of creative direction that helps you understand not just HOW to photograph, but WHY.

Photography doesn't have to be sharp. It doesn't have to be clear. But it does have to be honest.

Ready to find your own honesty? The Photographers Compass course launches July 16th.
