On April 22, 2025, a brutal terrorist attack in the Baisaran Valley near Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, claimed the lives of 26 civilians, predominantly Hindu tourists. The assailants, armed with AK-47s and M4 carbines, targeted individuals based on their religion, marking the deadliest civilian massacre in India since the 2008 Mumbai attacks.
In response, India launched "Operation Sindoor" on May 7, executing precision airstrikes on nine suspected terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. India asserted that these strikes were aimed at neutralizing imminent threats and emphasized efforts to avoid civilian casualties.
Pakistan condemned the strikes as an "act of war," claiming civilian deaths and retaliated by downing five Indian jets and conducting artillery attacks across the Line of Control. Both nations have since engaged in tit-for-tat measures, including closing airspace, suspending trade, and expelling diplomats.
International actors, including the U.S., China, and Russia, have expressed concern, urging both nuclear-armed countries to de-escalate tensions and engage in diplomatic dialogue.
