Heads up - tomorrow (8/2) the last episode (for now) of Off-Trail With Dan is cominatcha, 10am PT. Don't miss the exciting conclusion of the Convict Loop featuring Virginia Peak Pass (a new pass replacing part of the ESHR) and a spicy down climb on the north ridge of Mount Mendenhall!
Episode 2 of Off-Trail With Dan coming in hot today! Keep an eye out. Related, who would be interested in a video about Leave No Trace ethics as they pertain to hiking off-trail? Vote and let me know why you think what you think.
Bumping up the posting time of the first episode of Off-Trail With Dan to 11am PT today, because the World Cup Final. Pretty sure I also posted ESHR during the Super Bowl... when will I get better at timing these?
New series announcement! I'm joining with CalTopo to create a new show on my channel called Off-Trail With Dan. It's the show where we hike off-trail in the Sierra and I show you how I plan the route and how I navigate it. Check out the first episode TOMORROW at noon PT.
Hey everyone! Important ESHR update for anyone hiking it this season. (also sry I haven't posted in a while, was dealing with injury over the winter so didn't do anything cool).
The original route contained a section I was not crazy about: to access the main Sierra crest for the ridge segment leading up to Red Slate Mountain, I ascended the northwest shoulder of Mt. Mendenhall, which featured a lot of loose rock and is a bit risky to do with multiple people.
Last week I scouted a new way to access this ridge which I am calling Virginia Peak Pass. It is significantly more enjoyable and safer so it is now the new official route for ESHR. Here is a screenshot of the map of the area. The old route is marked 'NO'. Also attaching some pictures from this scouting trip where we also bagged Laurel and Mendenhall. Both great peaks.
I will be updating the guide materials accordingly, so if you purchased it, be on the lookout for the update email. There will also be a video coming soon about this last trip.
In this one, I take you through my process of route development using CalTopo, featuring examples from the Eastern Sierra High Route.
If you feel like youโve maxed out established trails or routes and youโre looking for a greater sense of adventure, check out this video and learn how to make your own routes!
Another cool thing- Iโm now partnered with CalTopo, so Iโm able to offer new subscribers to CalTopo 25% off your first year. Use code DAN25 during checkout at CalTopo.com/join
I hope you enjoy the video tomorrow and find it useful.
Thank you to everyone who purchased the ESHR Guide. Please donโt hesitate to reach out with any questions about the guide/route, especially once we get closer to hiking season. Iโll be very eager to hear how your trips go, too.
My next video will be about route development, using examples from the Eastern Sierra High Route. Iโm partnered with CalTopo for this video, so it will be a detailed look at how I use some of its more advanced features in my route development process.
Iโm hoping a lot of you will find this one interesting! Keep an eye out for it on Sunday. I promise it will be as good as the Super Bowl.
I would like to address the people who have suggested I not share a GPX of the route, since I did take what you said into account. The route guide was never going to include a GPX track of the exact line that I hiked. That kind of route sharing is not responsible (or fun) and it's also the least helpful tool you could have if safely navigating a difficult cross country route is your goal. A hiker on a route like that should be focused on the terrain they see around them, orienting themselves to it with topographic information and possibly written descriptions, not following a red line on their phone รก la Far Out.
So after much consideration, the official ESHR Route Guide includes the following items:
๐๏ธ Detailed Field Guide with all the route beta you'd need for navigating tricky sections
๐๏ธ Trip Planning and Logistics Document with all critical planning information
๐๏ธ Recommended Section Hikes ranging from 23 to 35 miles of varying difficulty
๐๏ธ 11x17 Printable Mapset with detailed breadcrumb-style waypoints, much like those included with Skurka's guides
๐๏ธ Very sparse downloadable waypoints in JSON format, including only trailheads and major passes, intended for convenience in downloading CalTopo tiles and having the most accurate pinpoint locations of critical passes
๐๏ธ Datasheet
I ran into technical difficulties in getting this to display in the channel store. Apparently you can't sell E-Books in Google Merchant, which is puzzling, since it didn't seem to have a problem with the North Lake South Lake Guide. Hopefully I can sort this out and get it on the store. For now it will live in the description of the YouTube video.
Speaking of that guide, if you purchased the NLSLHR Guide and use the same email address when checking out for this one, a discount of 30% will be automatically applied at checkout. (If you purchased it before it was on Shopify via PayPal shoot me an email).
Thanks so much for your interest in the ESHR, it's really cool to see and I hope those of you who give it a try have an awesome time.
First, a huge thanks to everyone who watched the ESHR film, and welcome to new subs! I'm happy the route resonated with so many of you, since this one is pretty special to me.
My target release date for the route guide is next Sunday, a week from today. Barring that, it'll be as soon as possible.
The guide will include GPX breadcrumbs packaged with a mapset and written directions, along with logistical information, a databook, and recommended section hikes. The written directions in particular will be a valuable and nuanced tool. The guide will be available here on my channel store for $15.
If you previously purchased my North Lake to South Lake High Route Guide (which is currently not available in the store), I'll send you a discount code for 30% off the ESHR guide, both to say thanks, and because the NLSLHR is part of the ESHR.ย If for whatever reason you don't receive it by the time the guide is live, please reach out to me at the email address listed in my channel description.
An updated NLSLHR Guide will be re-added to the store in the future as a free download.
What's next?
I really want to make a video detailing my process for developing the ESHR, and I think a lot of you would find that interesting.
Anything else you'd like to see here? Leave a comment and let me know.
