Today, on Den památky obětí komunistického režimu – the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Communist Regime – we also honor the memory of Milada Horáková, who was executed on this day in 1950 after a show trial.

A brave lawyer, politician, and voice for democracy, she stood up against both Nazism and Communism. Her story is one of courage, conviction, and sacrifice.

Here are a few Czech-English “false friends” that could totally trip you up:

📌 Aktuální ≠ Actual
– It means current, not real!

📌 Prezervativ ≠ Preservative
– One keeps food fresh. The other… let’s just say it’s not for salads. 😳

📌 Šéf ≠ Chef
– Your šéf is your boss, not someone whipping up risotto.

📌 Sympatický ≠ Sympathetic
– They're just nice, not necessarily feeling your pain.
