“What is Atheist Eid?” you ask. Many of us grew up in Muslim families and enjoy the cultural festivities of Eid with our families. Eid has become a cultural holiday for Pakistanis regardless of their belief system where people celebrate by using mehndi, visiting relatives and feasting with sheer khurma (meaning milk and dates) and other sweets. As atheists, we have no dogma and we happily celebrate any holiday, especially one that has become an integral part of our culture for generations. So, we wish you all a Happy Eid and hope that you will have a good time feasting with your families. There will be no live show this Sunday due to our busy schedules with our own families. We will see you next Sunday!

It is clear that the Prophet didn't understand what actually caused a solar eclipse. When he witnessed one during his life, he described it as one of the "signs of God" and that one should "hasten for prayer" when you see it, and free slaves (Sahih-a- Bukhari 2519, 3203). He was very fearful during this eclipse and had just lost his infant son. In 500 BCE Anaxagoras, a Greek philosopher correctly wrote that the solar eclipse was caused by the shadow of the moon. Around 500 AD, an Indian mathematician and astronomer named Aryabhata also said that the shadow of the moon causes the eclipse. Today, many people in the United States are getting ready to enjoy a solar eclipse without having to free slaves or pray in fear because we understand exactly why and when the eclipse will occur, thanks to modern science. --Momo
