During my years of aviation training at Ghana Airforce and the Nigeria Air Force Institute of Technology, I learned that one of the most fascinating aspects of flight is how pilots control an aircraft in the air.
It all comes down to control surfaces — the movable parts on the wings and tail that guide the plane’s movement.
These surfaces work by changing the airflow around the aircraft, allowing it to climb, turn, or descend smoothly.
There are three main control surfaces every pilot must master: 1. Ailerons – for rolling left or right 2. Elevator – for raising or lowering the nose 3. Rudder – for turning the aircraft’s nose left or right
