"Mute Boy" is the chilling final single from my album "Miracles" (distrokid.com/hyperfollow/matthewshell/miracles) and represents more than it seems on the surface.



Not only is it the first instance on the album of Jesus casting out a demon, but the tone of the song is not overtly sinister like "Legion" or "Mary's 7", which called for more intensity since multiple demons were being cast out of those two individuals.


For this song, "Mute Boy", an attempt was made to give the orchestration a haunting beauty to represent the boy's feelings of being freed from demonic position, while the electronic drums represent the demons still clawing at the door of his soul. But as the cello and Spanish guitar take over the song's arrangement more and more, the boy becomes truly free to thrive, free of demon possession, able to speak, and finally live in peace.



The deeper significance of the song lies in the years of writer's block that I had for lyrical music and even solo guitar work. But in the last two years, I realized that I needed to let my light shine, and someone speaking these words over me broke the shackles that had been holding me back for years and in 2025 I released 4 albums worth of gospel music, which is all my parents ever wanted of me. And I'm honored to say that my Mom was able to hear all of it before she passed on 9/18. Not only that, but between 2024 and 2025 I released over 200 songs that I personally wrote, produced, engineered, mixed, and mastered myself, so no more writer's block.
