this week, let's practice hamsa mudra in order to embody the grace and purity of the swan. the mudra is formed by bringing the index and thumb together to form a "beak" and extending the other fingers out long. this mudra helps to cultivate presence and is linked with purity and divine union. we can use the pointed connection of the thumb and index finger as a metaphor for the union of our individual soul with the universal spirit.

this week's asana practice on the channel, we'll be exploring presence through the peak pose of hamsasana or flamingo pose. hamsa, in fact, translates to swan in sanskrit. swan, in scripture, was attributed the ability to separate milk and water from a mixture of the two - a metaphor for the ability to understand the truth of reality from that which is false. hamsa served as the mount for sarasvati, the deity of knowledge, music, and creative arts (and of my personal mantra!) see you on the mat wednesday 🌱

the mudra we'll be practicing in this week's meditation is karuna mudra, otherwise known as the gesture of compassion. it is a symbolic gesture in more ways than one. the left hand represents self-love and compassion, while the right symbolizes compassion and empathy for others.

i like to think of it this way: the left hand is lower than the right, suggesting that a strong foundation of self-love is needed to give to others. the elevation of the right hand represents a higher calling towards centering our lives around compassion. but in the end, they feed into each other, stressing the importance of finding balance between giving and receiving.

krounchasana, heron pose, is much more than imitating the bird. in the origin story of ramayana, the soon to be poet valmiki sees a beautiful pair of herons dancing by the river. a hunter comes and shoots one of the pair with an arrow (this is what the pose is meant to look like). moved, valmiki spontaneously curses the hunter in what turns out to be a perfect shloka (verse). brahma appears and commands valmiki to compose the epic of rama's life in the same meter he used to curse the hunter, which he does. the lesson here is that compassion has strong powers of creativity.

this week's meditation practice is about cultivating humility, love, and loyalty. kapota mudra (named for sage kapota - pigeon or dove mudra) is thought to help us embody these characteristics and communicate better with our own bodies and minds. in indian epics like the ramayana, pigeons carried important messages. let us carry these messages of humility and love to our heart today.

kapotasana, pigeon pose, is named for sage kapota, a powerful character in the mahabharata who moved with incredible speed and grace. we don't often give pigeons much credit today but they are in fact extremely intelligent and agile - carrier pigeons have even turned the tides of battles and wars.

because of this, kapotasana isn't just about posing like a pigeon, but embodying the attributes of sage kapota and their namesake - power, agility and wisdom.

join me wednesday as we explore this pose in the next asana practice!

hakini mudra is a powerful hand gesture used to focus the mind. the gesture mimics the uniting of the two hemispheres of the brain, improving mental clarity, memory, and attention.

kakasana, "kaka" meaning crow in sanskrit, is the focus of this week's asana practice. the pose brings to mind the crow's persistence and watchful gaze - the same focus we must have to stay steadfast on our journey.

in mythology, garuda is a fierce warrior who battled gods in order to obtain the nectar of immortality. this reminds me of the beautiful death spiral that eagles do in courtship - defying gravity until the last second in order to pass along their genes to the next generation. we too can call upon the power of garuda, using garuda mudra, to help cultivate our courage - like in this week's guided meditation! tune in wednesday 🪽🪽

garudasana, eagle pose, is named for garuda, the mythical eagle-like mount of lord vishnu in sacred texts and mythology. this pose is sharp, balanced and determined.

this week we'll be tapping into courage in our asana practice with the help of garuda.
