Researchers in Serbia have reported what appears to be the first documented detection of raccoon dog and fox amdoparvovirus, or RFAV, in domestic dogs following a serious illness outbreak involving several Dobermans.

We want to be very clear about what is and is not currently known.

This research is preliminary and has not yet been peer-reviewed. It does NOT establish that RFAV is spreading widely, that Dobermans are more susceptible than other breeds, or that the virus definitively caused every reported illness or death.

Dobermans were simply the breed involved in these first documented domestic-dog cases. That fact alone does not show that Dobermans are uniquely vulnerable or more susceptible than other breeds.

There is also no established mortality rate for RFAV in domestic dogs at this time.

The accompanying graphic lists symptoms reported among the affected dogs. These symptoms can have many possible causes and do not, by themselves, indicate RFAV. Anyone concerned about their dog’s health should contact a veterinarian.

We are sharing this because emerging research deserves attention, but we believe it is equally important not to create unnecessary fear or present preliminary information as confirmed fact. We will continue watching for peer-reviewed findings and official veterinary guidance.
