When the churning of the ocean took place between the gods and the demons, its purpose was to obtain Amrita, the elixir of immortality, so that the gods could become immortal. Many divine objects emerged from the churning—Kamadhenu (the wish-fulfilling cow), Kalpavriksha (the wish-fulfilling tree), Goddess Lakshmi, and finally, Dhanvantari appeared with the pot of Amrita in his hands.
