No one talks about the part where your “dream home” feels… empty. Or expensive. Or emotionally confusing for no reason. I did. In detail. On Substack. (You’re gonna want this one.)
Let's kick off the Monthly Pattern Mixing Challenge!Â
Every month, we're sharing our pattern mixing wins, fails, and everything in between! Because honestly, some of my best lessons came from combinations that absolutely did not work.
Why are hard surfaces (yes, I’m looking at you tiles, flooring, and cabinetry) some of the hardest choices to make?
It seems obvious. But it’s sneakier than that.
We instinctively know these surfaces are the heavy hitters. They do the real work of making a home feel elevated, cozy, and intentional. One innocent hour on Pinterest and suddenly the pattern is clear: rich floors, textured tiles, cabinetry with personality. You see the vision.
And then… design centre day arrives. This is where most of us quietly chicken out.
Sometimes it’s budget (a very real factor). But more often? It’s confidence. Or the lack of it.
Because what if you make the bold choice (the one that actually reflects your dream home) and then you hate it? Worse… what if you paid extra to hate it?
No one blames you for second-guessing when you’re making a lifelong decision from a tiny 4x4 tile sample under fluorescent lighting. So we go safe. Neutral. Inoffensive.
And then we move in and wonder why the house doesn’t sing the way we imagined. That’s the real mistake.
Yes, hard surfaces are harder to change. But ask yourself this: would you rather regret taking a risk… or regret never taking one at all?
We played it safe in one key area. And I have major regrets.
I’ll unpack exactly where we went wrong (and what I’d do differently) on Friday. Stick around. This one might save you from a very expensive “meh.”

It’s not your imagination and it’s definitely not because you “have no style.” Most new builds are missing three things that make a house feel alive: colour, texture, and pattern.
Instead, you’re offered: 47 shades of white (all somehow different, yet emotionally identical), flat, shiny surfaces with zero depth, and maybe (if you’re lucky) two patterned tile options that feel… timid.
Then comes Design Centre Day.
The Super Bowl of the build process.
You’ve planned for this. You’ve made too many Pinterest boards. You’ve rehearsed your choices. You walk in, surrounded by beautifully styled vignettes, and the excitement hits fever pitch.
And then, plot twist, the design consultant gently explains the cost. Suddenly your “dream selections” are casually doubling your budget.
Been there. Currently living it.
This week I’m breaking down: what we actually spent money on, what we skipped, and the design decisions we already regret (yes, plural).
If your new build feels flat, beige, or a little too polite. Stick around. We’re fixing that. One intentional choice at a time.
Three months into our new build and we’re still very much living in a white box. I’m sharing the full story in a new Substack series, The White Box Diaries—starting with the before, the decisions, and the evidence. 👉 Read Part One (link in bio).
Well the Pantone Colour of the Year is here... I have thoughts. Just posted a new Substack article breaking it all down. Let me know what you think about this very controversial choice.
Thank you for all the love on my 2026 Design Trends video!! There has been a bit of discussion in the comments around what we think the Pantone colour of the year will be?? If you had to guess, what shade do you think they will choose??
