You don't need the top of the line stuff to get things done. Think: back in the day, sound designers used cables and wires and plugs, connecting one type of circuit to another, just to see what came out on the other end. To today's standards, the audio quality was laughable. Like garbage. However, they needed to get things done, and were exploring new boundaries.
Now, we have good sound quality, and if you know signal processing, you realize that you don't need TOO much to actually make things work. This is where I shamelessly link my video of krUmUHr as an example, (which features a low-quality knock-off of Xynth's Chroma, but gets the job done)
The only effect I use nowadays apart from Ableton's default plugins is Convology XT, and it's completely free. It means I can render sounds as an impulse response and reuse them to modulate the sound, and potentially cut RAM.
Master all these THEN move to the big guns, like Serum, Vital, FM8, etc.
Why just Operator? Operator teaches FM synthesis & additive synthesis. These are crucial skills to have to help you understand the spectrum, and FM synthesis gives you an extra edge in understanding how to modulate waveforms with OR without wavetables. When I need to get things done quickly, Operator is one of the fastest plugins available for creating new sounds, now that I know how each part works, and cost efficient with RAM. I use it to make drums, leads, pads, synths, and even impulse responses which I use on top of other sounds.
!!!YOU SPILL YOUR COFFEE ON YOUR LAPTOP!!! ...all your plugins are fine, but your vocoder is broken and your internet connection too! You have unlimited RAM but you're limited to options in Ableton Live.

Here is your starter kit for sound design:
- Operator
- Convology XT
- Shaper
- Compressor
- EQ Three & Eight
Master all these THEN move to the big guns, like Serum, Vital, FM8, etc.
