Longtime fans of the channel might remember Dr. Abel Gomez. He guest starred in my Intro to Indigenous Religions video five years ago! Dr. Gomez is back for a live lecture on indigenous spirituality TODAY. Join here: www.religiondepartment.com/offers/YhTLCz27/checkou…

For many Indigenous peoples around the world, land is central to identity, religion, politics, and culture. Creation stories often recount Indigenous nations being both FROM a place and OF a place, and ceremonial practices often situate Indigenous peoples within a web of relationships and responsibilities to land.

Join Dr. Gomez as he explores how land and spirituality intertwine. The lecture starts in just a few hours — 1:00 PM EST!

Apparently "the Rapture" is trending? Time to resurface an oldie: No, the Rapture is not in the Bible.

You may have seen my recent announcement video about The Religion Department, but in case you missed it: The Religion Department is RFB’s brand-new online learning platform and community where scholars teach online classes on religion for the general public.

This project was inspired by the best parts of a university religious studies department: a place where you can dive into the academic study of religion alongside passionate teachers and curious learners.

We’re offering a whole bunch of seminars and guest lectures:
1) Intro to Coptic with Dr. Lydia Bremer-McCollum
2) The Historical Jesus with Dr. Travis Proctor
3) The Archaeology of the Hebrew Bible with Dr. Tine Rassalle
4) American Paranormal with Thorn Mooney
5) The Buddha: Biography of a Myth with Dr. Don Lopez Jr.

New classes are being added every month. With a membership, you’ll get access to live guest lectures with leading scholars, guided reading groups with me (Dr. Andrew Henry), a growing library of recorded lectures, and big discounts on our signature multi-week seminars. It’s a way to study religion seriously, without needing to enroll in a university program.

Register now for Dr. David Litwa’s upcoming webinar on Marcion!: www.religiondepartment.com/marcion

Was Marcion the first Gospel writer?
Did he edit Luke—or did Luke edit him?
And how did Marcion see himself—as a prophet, a reformer, or something else entirely?

Join my friend and fellow YouTuber and scholar Dr. David Litwa (‪@m.davidlitwa‬ ) for a live lecture on one of early Christianity’s most controversial figures: Marcion of Sinope—a second-century thinker who rejected most of the emerging New Testament and promoted a radically different vision of Christianity.

Dr. Litwa will walk us through the cutting-edge debate about Marcion’s Gospel and whether Marcion was the author or editor of a preexisting text. I’ll be the host and helping to run the live Q&A session after his lecture!

What did Jesus wear? This 19th-century painting by James Tissot imagines Jesus in a flowing white robe and mantle, but this isn’t particularly accurate. Join us for a live online class with Dr. Katie Turner, an expert in ancient Greco-Roman and Jewish clothing. From tunics and mantles to tzitzit and tefillin, this class dives into the fabrics, fashions, and religious symbolism of first-century Judea. Register here: www.religiondepartment.com/jesus-wear

Whenever I cover Daoism, I try to go beyond the popular texts like the Daodejing and Zhuangzi and explore the wider tradition. In my recent video on the Jade Emperor, we dive into “Gaoshang Yuhuang Benxing Jijing,” or the Collected Scripture on the Deeds of the Jade Sovereign. According to this text, the Jade Emperor earned his throne through billions of lifetimes cultivating the Dao, healing the sick, and writing scriptures. Eventually, he achieved the title Tathāgata, a term usually reserved for the Buddha himself, before ascending even higher to become Jade Thearch. This bold Daoist narrative claims the Jade Emperor not only attained Buddhahood, but surpassed it, teaching bodhisattvas the true path to awakening.
