Welcoming a new friend! Frame designed by the engineers at @raawmountainbikes , components selected by me and skilfully assembled by @longcutcycles
Louise @headinthesky_mtb recently asked me how I felt about getting a new full suspension adventure bike, after 6 years on my trusty Bird Aeris AM9. The thought that came to mind was "it's like meeting a new friend". This might sound a bit odd, but think about it. This mechanical device will probably join me on long days and very specific tours in challenging terrain for years to come. It'll join me where most people I know can't or don't want to join. A lot of time spent alone with the bike as my companion and enabler.
It will take some time to get used to the way it rides. After 6 years, the only original component left of the Bird Aeris AM9 was the frame itself. Literally everything else had been replaced or upgraded over time. This not only made me intimately familiar with the feel of the bike. It also taught me what I like in components. I'd tag Bird but I feel like I'm betraying them by switching engineers haha.
In case you wonder, this is my build:
Suspension
FOX 38 Factory Grip2 170mm
Fox DHX2 Factory tuned for the frame
Dropper: BikeYoke Revive 213 with Triggy lever. This is the only issue I have so far. The insertion length is JUST too shallow so I'll probably end up going for a Revive 185 because they are a bit shorter and a bit shallower to insert.
Cane Creek Hellbender 70 headset
Brakes: TRP DH Evo with 203mm rotors. First time trying something new from my trusty Shimano XT 4-pistons. I was seduced by the reputation of great modulation, power and user friendly maintenance.
Drive train: Shimano 12 spd, XT shifter, XT derailleur. If it gets destroyed an SLX derailleur will do just as well. To finish a 28T AbsoluteBlack oval chain ring protected by a OneUp bash guard.
Wheels: Hope Fortus 35. Rubber depending on the situation.
Hope F22 pedals with 170mm XT cranks and XT Bottom Bracket
