Happy Shri Krishna Janmashtami !!
Radhe Radhe! 🙏
King Kansa of Mathura learned from a celestial voice (Akashvani) that Devaki’s eighth son would kill him. Driven by fear, Kamsa imprisoned Devaki and Vasudeva, killing each of their newborns immediately. On the eighth day (Ashtami) of the dark fortnight in the month of Bhadrapada, when Shri Krishna was born, the prison locks opened on their own, and the guards fell into a deep sleep. To save infant Krishna from Kamsa, Vasudeva crossed the Yamuna River and left him safely at the home of his friend Nanda Baba and Yashoda in Gokul.
The mythological legends surrounding Shri Krishna's birth and the slaying of Kamsa contain several profound episodes and secrets, mentioned exclusively in texts like the Garga Samhita, Shrimad Bhagavatam, and Harivamsa Purana.
Kamsa's Past Life and the Origin of His Enmity
According to the Padma Purana, Kamsa was a demon named Kalanemi in his previous birth. Lord Vishnu had slain him during His Mohini and Narasimha/Varaha avatars. Due to this, Kamsa harbored an unconscious fear and intense enmity toward Narayana right from birth.
The Secret of Devaki's First Six Sons
Devaki’s first six sons killed by Kamsa were originally the six sons of Sage Marichi, known as the Shadgarbha. Due to a curse, they were first born as the sons of Hiranyakashipu, and later Yogamaya transferred them into Devaki’s womb. By dying at Kamsa's hands, they were liberated from that ancient curse and attained Vaikuntha Dham directly.
The Mystery of the Seventh Womb (The Transfer of Balarama Ji)
Devaki’s seventh womb carried Balarama Ji, the incarnation of Sheshanaga. So Kamsa could not kill him, Lord Vishnu instructed Yogamaya to attract (transfer) the embryo from Devaki’s womb into the womb of Rohini, Vasudeva's second wife in Gokul. Because the embryo was attracted and transferred (Sankarshana), Balarama Ji received the name Sankarshana. Kamsa believed Devaki had suffered a natural miscarriage.
The Episode of Touching the Feet While Crossing the Yamuna
As Vasudeva crossed the surging Yamuna River carrying newborn Krishna in a basket (Soop), the water level kept rising until Vasudeva was on the verge of drowning. The Yamuna’s water was rising because Yamuna Devi longed to touch the infant Lord's lotus feet. The moment Vasudeva tilted the basket downward and Krishna’s toe touched the water, Yamuna Devi calmed down and opened a smooth path for Vasudeva.
Nanda Baba's Real Role
While common belief holds that Nanda Baba was merely a cowherd or the village chief of Gokul, the Harivamsa Purana notes that he was actually Vasudeva's cousin and extremely close friend. When Yashoda Ji gave birth to Yogamaya (a girl), she fell unconscious due to labor pain and the mystic influence of Yogamaya. Vasudeva silently picked up the baby girl and placed Krishna beside Yashoda. Yashoda Ji did not even realize whether she had given birth to a boy or a girl; she only remembered delivering a child.
The Final Abode of Yogamaya
When Kamsa tried to dash the baby girl (Yogamaya) against a rock, she flew into the sky, manifested in her eight-armed (Ashtabhuja) divine form, and declared, "The one who will kill you has already been born in Gokul." According to tradition, Goddess Yogamaya subsequently established herself on the Vindhyachal mountains, where she is worshipped today as Vindhyavasini Devi.
