In late 2016, I just finished a quick tour through Europe, and as the fall and winter months quickly approached, it was time to venture into warmer waters.
So I booked an awesomely inexpensive direct flight from Belgium to Recife, Brazil for just $250 USD.
In the morning of my flight, I traveled to the Brussels airport, only to find out that Brussels has 2 airports, and I was in the wrong one.
I tried to rush my way over to the other airport, but it took almost 2 hours.
So, I missed my flight, and had to purchase another ticket for an additional $700 USD, which included a long lay-over in Sao Paolo.
Moral of the story? Brussels has 2 major airports.
Upon arriving in Recife, I just wanted to forget about that expensive logistical mess, and quickly began enjoying the hot sunny weather, glimmering blue oceans, and the constant reminder that the beaches in Recife have sharks looking for their next meal.
The following is my experience in Recife after living there for a month of 1.5 months total.
This involved 2 stays, of 1 month each, separated by 1 month in-between.
After the first month, I continued traveling through 3 more cities in Brazil, including a deep dive into the Amazon Rain forest, followed by a quick trip into Uruguay, then Argentina, and ultimately, back to Curitiba, Brazil.
What initially attracted me to Curitiba was the resounding 'propaganda' and positive opinions about the city from many Brazilians along my journey.
Many Brazilians consider Curitiba the cleanest, safest, most developed metropolitan city, with the highest standard of living in Brazil.
My original plan was to settle into Sao Paolo for a few months instead of Curitiba.
But after a quick tour of Sao Paolo, I found it to be an overwhelmingly dense and turbulent concrete Jungle.

In 2014, a friend invited me to go with him deep into the Amazon, to a village to drink Ayahuasca for 4 days.
It was completely not what I expected, and the experience remains with me to this day.
In this video, I break down exactly what Ayahuasca feels like, and the craziness that happened during the trip.
