Take one look at those fangs and it’s easy to see why the 𝐜𝐥𝐨𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐥𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐝 has earned such an unforgettable nickname. 😮🐆

🔸 𝐅𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐎𝐮𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧
Clouded leopards have the 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐡 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐤𝐮𝐥𝐥 𝐬𝐢𝐳𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐚𝐭.

Their upper canines can reach roughly 𝟐 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬 (𝟓 𝐜𝐦) 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠—remarkable for a cat that typically weighs only about 𝟐𝟓–𝟓𝟎 𝐩𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐬.

🔸 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐭 𝐚 𝐋𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐋𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐚 𝐒𝐚𝐛𝐞𝐫-𝐓𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐡
Their unusually long, narrow canines and skull structure resemble some features seen in extinct saber-toothed cats.

That’s why clouded leopards are sometimes affectionately called “𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐧-𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐬𝐚𝐛𝐞𝐫-𝐭𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐬.” 🦷

They aren’t descendants of saber-toothed cats—but the resemblance is pretty amazing!

Clouded leopards can open their mouths 𝐞𝐱𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐰𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐬, allowing those long canines plenty of room to do their job.

Their skull and jaw are specially shaped to accommodate those impressive teeth.

🔸 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐅𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐅𝐨𝐫?
The long canines help clouded leopards:
🐾 Grip and hold struggling prey
🐾 Deliver deep, precise bites
🐾 Secure animals while hunting in dense forest and trees

Their prey can include monkeys, deer, wild pigs, squirrels, birds, and other forest animals.

🔸 𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐂𝐚𝐭? 𝐁𝐢𝐠-𝐂𝐚𝐭 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞!
Clouded leopards aren’t among the largest cats—but their teeth make them look like they borrowed equipment from one! 😹

If a tiger had canine teeth in the 𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐬𝐤𝐮𝐥𝐥 as a clouded leopard, those fangs would be truly enormous. 😳

🐾 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐬𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐬 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞? Sometimes it looks like a 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐥 𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐚. Sometimes it looks like a 𝐫𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐨𝐩, a 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩—or even a 𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐤.💦

Our conservation partner, the Ocelot Working Group, had a busy July working alongside communities and organizations across Mexico to protect small wild cats and help people and wildlife coexist. 🌎🌿

Their work included:
📷 Training communities in Sierra de Montenegro to monitor small wild cats
🏠 Building and reinforcing predator-proof chicken coops in Mahahual, Huasteca Potosina and Jalisco
🐕 Sterilizing 58 dogs and 22 domestic cats to reduce disease transmission and harmful encounters with wildlife
🌿 Leading environmental education workshops focused on responsible pet ownership and connections with local wildlife
💧 Receiving a grant to install 10 new rainwater catchment systems and wildlife drinking stations in Calakmul
⚠️ Raising awareness as the jaguarundi’s IUCN Red List status changes from Least Concern to Near Threatened

Each project addresses a different challenge, but 𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐫 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐬, 𝐝𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦.

Stockier, wilder, and far more elusive, this secretive feline has roamed Europe’s forests for thousands of years.

📍 𝐑𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞: Parts of Europe, including forested regions from western to eastern Europe
🌳 𝐇𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭: Woodlands, forest edges, scrublands, and grasslands
📏 𝐒𝐢𝐳𝐞: About 6–18 lbs (2.7–8 kg)
🎨 𝐂𝐨𝐚𝐭: Thick gray-brown fur with subtle dark stripes and a bushy, ringed tail with a blunt black tip

Their sturdy body and thick tail help distinguish them from domestic cats.

🧠𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐌𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐏𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐃𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐊𝐧𝐨𝐰
🌙 Mostly nocturnal and extremely hard to spot
🐭 Feeds mainly on rodents, rabbits, and other small prey
🌲 Depends on cover and quiet habitat to survive
🐾 Often confused with feral domestic cats

One of the biggest challenges in protecting them is simply knowing where true wild cats still remain.

Meet the 𝐑𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐲-𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐂𝐚𝐭—one of the smallest wild cats in the world.

Found primarily in 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐚 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐫𝐢 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐚, this miniature predator generally weighs only about 𝟐–𝟑.𝟓 𝐩𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐬 (𝟎.𝟗–𝟏.𝟔 𝐤𝐠). Despite being small enough to resemble a young domestic kitten, it is a completely wild and highly capable hunter.

Its name comes from the rows of 𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭-𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐬 scattered across its grayish coat. Large eyes help it see in low light, while its compact body and remarkable agility allow it to move quickly through vegetation and climb trees with ease.

Rusty-spotted cats hunt rodents, birds, frogs, reptiles, and insects—proving that an effective predator does not have to be large.

Because these 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐫𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐨𝐛𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐝, researchers still have much to learn about their lives in the wild. 𝐇𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭 𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 make protecting the landscapes they depend upon increasingly important.
