Hanwha Aerospace’s K9 wheeled self-propelled howitzer (K9MH) has received the U.S. Army designation “XM1776.” The new designation was unveiled at AUSA 2026 in Washington, D.C., with U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Frank Lozano in attendance.

“XM1776” combines “X,” indicating development and testing status, with “1776,” the year of American independence, reflecting its intended role in defending American freedom. The designation adds significance to U.S.-Korea defense cooperation as the United States marks its 250th anniversary. Following a prototype supply contract for the U.S. Army’s Mobile Tactical Cannon (MTC) program in August, Hanwha Aerospace delivered the first prototype this month.

At the exhibition, Hanwha showcased the K9MH alongside the K9, K10, CHUNMOO, and air defense, maritime, and unmanned systems. It also highlighted the production process at its Arkansas ammunition facility, while Hanwha Systems introduced its AI-powered short-range AESA radar to the North American market for the first time.

Through timely delivery of the XM1776 prototype and the establishment of local manufacturing capabilities in Alabama and Arkansas, Hanwha Aerospace aims to strengthen its position as a trusted partner to the U.S. Army.

Hanwha Aerospace and Lockheed Martin UK have unveiled a Redback Infantry Fighting Vehicle fitted with a British-built 40mm turret at DVD 2026. The vehicle shows how quickly an in-service platform can be matched with new capabilities for a new customer.

The Redback hull now carries Lockheed Martin UK's turret, armed with the CTA International 40mm cannon and, for the first time, with SkyKeeper Command and Control built into the turret itself.

Hanwha Aerospace selected the CTA International 40mm because the range of ammunition available for the weapon gives a next-generation IFV the flexibility that future operating environments will demand. That assessment led the company to partner with Lockheed Martin UK, and the two companies have integrated the turret onto the Redback hull at pace. The result is a low-risk, in-service platform that NATO customers can tailor to their specific needs.

The report also notes that Hanwha Aerospace’s rapid rise reflects the growing strategic importance of defense within South Korea’s brand economy and its increasing visibility on the global stage.

The USD 3.1 billion valuation reflects Brand Finance’s assessment of factors including brand strength, business performance, brand-related revenues and future revenue forecasts.

As Hanwha Aerospace continues to expand its global business and partnerships, this recognition marks another milestone in the brand’s growing presence worldwide.

Hanwha Aerospace has signed a KRW 641.1 billion (€418 million) contract to supply Chunmoo systems to Croatia, marking Chunmoo’s third European export deal this year.

The agreement marks the first-ever export of a Korean weapons system to Croatia, making Croatia the fourth European operator of Chunmoo, following Poland, Norway and Estonia.

The package includes 18 Chunmoo launchers and associated systems, as well as command-and-control system integration, training and integrated logistics support.

Chunmoo can operate a range of precision-guided munitions and can be flexibly configured to meet each country’s operational environment and requirements. Its ability to integrate with national command-and-control systems also supports a high level of interoperability.

Hanwha Aerospace will also work with local industry to build sustainable maintenance, repair and overhaul capabilities and strengthen long-term local support.

The Chunmoo User Club, set to officially launch next year, will provide a platform for European operators to share operational expertise and further strengthen interoperability.

Building on this contract, Hanwha Aerospace will continue to develop a long-term, forward-looking defense partnership with Croatia.

K9 user nations have come together in Estonia to help shape the future of artillery capabilities.

Taking place in Tartu from Sept. 2 to 4, the 5th K9 User Club brings together more than 200 military and industry representatives from seven K9 user nations, along with observer delegations from Spain and Sweden.

Participants are sharing operational and maintenance experience while discussing training, ammunition interoperability and future capability requirements. Hanwha Aerospace has also presented a next-generation K9 operating concept integrating VTOL fire-guidance drones to shorten the sensor-to-shooter cycle.

New wheeled artillery concepts incorporating the K9A2’s fully automated turret demonstrate how proven K9 technologies can be applied beyond the traditional tracked configuration.

Hanwha’s selection for the U.S. Army’s Mobile Tactical Cannon prototype program further highlights its expertise in next-generation mobile artillery.

The TOMMS Sustainment Portal has also drawn attention for its role in digitizing spare-parts procurement and logistics and supporting the transition toward predictive sustainment.
