Julia “Butterfly” Hill’s Forest Vigil
Julia Lorraine Hill, known as Julia Butterfly Hill, was born on February 18, 1974. In December 1997, at the age of 23, she climbed into the canopy of an approximately 1,000-year-old California coast redwood tree, named Luna, which stood about 200 feet (around 61 meters) tall. She began her tree-sit on December 10, 1997, determined to protect Luna from being cut down by the Pacific Lumber Company. Inspired by the rising moon at the time of her ascent, activists chose the name “Luna” (Spanish for “moon”) for the tree.
Julia lived atop Luna on a small platform 180 feet above the ground—facing wind, rain, storms, isolation, and skepticism—for a total of 738 days, until December 18, 1999. During this time, she endured harsh weather, freezing rain, El Niño winds, harassment by security or loggers, and isolation from society.
Her act of steadfast civil disobedience attracted worldwide attention. In December 1999, Julia and Pacific Lumber Company reached an agreement: Luna and trees within a 200-foot (around 61 meters) buffer zone around it would be permanently protected. In return, Julia would come down, and the activists would pay $50,000, which the company would donate to Cal Poly Humboldt for sustainable forestry research.
Sanctuary Forest—a local land trust—became the trustee of the conservation easement, legally ensuring the long-term protection of Luna and the surrounding area.
As of 2025, Julia Butterfly Hill is 51 years old, and Luna, along with its surrounding ecosystem, continues to survive and stand as a powerful symbol of environmental courage and grassroots activism.
