Start with whatever you have! Wherever You are! Funny story: when i first started making music, I had quite literally no idea what i was doing. I was like a baby learning to crawl, all weak knees and constantly falling over. It can be so frustrating when our vision doesn’t quite match up with our technical abilities. So often, this is where we stop, right where we should keep exploring because we want to be great, and fucking fast! I want to tell you now, dont stop! Because what i quickly realized in this process is that the fact that my skills as a musician were still naïve and fragile, that they didnt quite align perfectly with my vision, was actually something to be celebrated as unique and exciting. The gap in what your ambitions are and what you are physically able to create is actually such a magical place to play inside. It creates a sense of creative urgency, messed up brush strokes like when you first start a painting. A feeling of i cant wait! I want to tell my story today! Allowing yourself to create, regardless of your technique tells another story, the story of when you earnestly want to express yourself despite outside circumstances. Thats punk shit baby. For example, on my first EP, i tried so many odd things. I strapped a microphone to a chair and recorded myself tap dancing to replace the drums, i took pots and pans from my kitchen and banged them together in delight like a kid. And when it came to make the cover art, i couldnt afford to pay for a fancy photoshoot so i cut out and collaged these houses over my photo in finalcut. Looking at it now, it could seem a bit kitchy, but this was exactly what i always dreamed of: to be an Artist and a beginner forever, with out limits. To be forever free. Free. Forever.
