Travel for animals

Finally having the opportunity to travel to Italy, I dedicated a day to Faunistic Park La Torbiera to visit Altana and of course her partner Fellini (thanks to Manulization, the name is awesome!).
Altana is already two years old and is still lively and cute. I recognized her immediately, but I believe she has forgotten me long ago.
Fellini is also a very beautiful little furball, very curious, and has been looking at me with his eyes.
The weather was nice and sunny. I was so lucky to meet Altana and Fellini on such a beautiful day!

At Zoo Jászberény, I finally had the opportunity to calmly pick up the camera and record the moment of meeting the fishing cat.
After seeing a fishing cat for the first time, I couldn't stop thinking about this animal. In order to learn more about them, I looked up information online and summarized nine things about fishing cats. Friends who are interested in this small cat can check it out.
Nine things to know about fishing cats

1. As a fisherman among cats, fish accounts for more than 70% of its food, so its English name is fishing cat. The species epithet "viverrinus" in its Latin scientific name means civet, which means that its appearance is somewhat similar to that of a civet.

2. The fishing cat can swim long distances in the water and even dive. It is probably the best swimmer among cats.

3. The origin of fishing cats is in South and Southeast Asia, where they inhabit scrub areas in forest areas, reed catkins along rivers, and evergreen forests on tropical coasts.

4. Fishing cats are about twice the size of domestic cats.

5. Among the fishing cats kept in zoos, they have been observed throwing food into the water and then pulling it out of the water to eat it.

6. When fishing, fishing cats will stay near the water, imitating the movements of insects, and use their claws to create tiny waves on the water to lure fish in the water to swim over.

7. The fishing cat has “half webs” between its toes and its claws cannot be fully retracted. This is its most unique feature. This structure makes it less likely to get stuck in the mud when walking and is also conducive to hunting underwater.

8. The fishing cat’s ears are very flexible and can rotate almost 180 degrees. If necessary, just turn the ears and it can hear sounds from multiple directions.

9. The IUCN Red List lists fishing cats as a vulnerable species. There are about 30 zoos raising this animal across Europe.

Travel for animals

After a whole year, I finally met Aysen again. Last year, Aysen moved from the Budapest Zoo to the Kosice Zoo in Slovakia, where he met the female manul Alani. Their respective houses are connected by a passage in the middle. Aysen sometimes runs over to play with Alani. Apparently they got along well, at least no cat was kicked out of the room.
The latest video about Aysen and Alani has been released.

Travel for animals

Picture 1: Bohus always likes to stay in the small nest in the upper right corner, and only occasionally comes down for a walk.
Picture 2: Currently, of the six baby manuls born in 2022, only Aytas remains in the Budapest Zoo for the time being. Although he lives next door to Bohus, he is not on display. We can only occasionally see Aytas through Bohus’ cage (circled in orange)
Picture 3 and Picture 4: Photos of Bohus that I found on the zoo’s website. I'm terrible at telling "who is who" among animals, so I was worried about misidentifying the cat, then I downloaded the photo of Bohus. For comparison, the one I photographed(Picture 1) is exactly Bohus, right?😉
