Poveglia - The Island Of Horrors

Poveglia is a small island located in the Venetian Lagoon in Venice, Italy. Story goes that during the Roman times, it was used to isolate the Plague victims of the Black Death that spread throughout Europe. According to the story, 160, 000 people died on this Island throughout history and the remains can still be found on this Island -- they didn't bother doing much of a clean-up.

In 1922, the Island was used as a Mental Institution (this has been proven) -- of all things. A not so nice mental health doctor ran the institution; he was said to have experimented and butchered many of the patients on the Island. After going mad --from seeing the spirits of the plague victims-- the doctor jumped to his death from the Bell Tower, which can still be seen today.

"On a trip to Italy, I personally tried to get a boat ride to the Island, but was not fortunate enough to find anyone willing to take me and my group of friends. The Island is not available to tourists and citizens. It has been essentially closed off to the public as it has been deemed a hazard. Some locals are allowed to use it during the day for farming purposes but that's rare." - from a subscriber
