TOWARDS A WILD URBANISM

Contradiction in terms ?

Perhaps... but as Bertolt Brecht said, contradiction means hope.

And from contradiction to that chaos that was to be the ground from which a dancing star was possible, the one Nietzsche wrote about, it is a small distance.

Urbanism, in our tired and tiring conception, is a dry, objectivist, rational sum of calculations meant to devoid life of life.

This is what it is, "urbansim."

And we are all its victims, Nature included.

Inner nature as well, meaning our souls.

But WILD URBANISM, the one Ricardo Bofill talked about, was to be a very different thing.

Unfortunately he betrayed it too, after he moved to France. But before that fatidic, uninspired move, at the outskirts of Barcelona a glorious proof of what wild urbanism was to be can still be seen:

LA FABRICA

Most surely the most beautiful and the most inspiring architecture studio (could we call it an "office" ?) in the world.

Together with a few early works, LA FABRICA is the best work by Ricardo Bofill and Taller de Arquitectura.

Could we live in a world inspired by the "wild urbanism' of La Fabrica ?

Gladly.

More than gladly.

ENTHUSIASTICALLY.

But we have to get rid of what Einstein (a scientist!) called "the rational mind" and return to the true seat of creativity: THE INTUITIVE MIND.

The playful, "irrational" intuitive mind, connected, in depth, with our soul.

Let's imagine Earth was / is Mars and we just arrived here.

Would we continue to build, on Earth, as we do now ?

Let's build on Earth as if it was Mars.

And let's imagine we came from far away, to live here.

Would we live and build as we do now ?

I doubt it.

The romanticism of a new beginning would force us towards something else.

Towards LA FABRICA.

Let's follow Ricardo Bofill, before he departed for France.
