Breaking News! It looked like this was going to be the first spring since 2011 that we didn't have Eastern Screech Owls nesting in a backyard box. Only twice in those 15 years was there total nest failure so something on the order of 44 owlets fledged over the years. They usually start roosting in early December, lay eggs in late February, hatch in late March and fledge the first week of May so I had given up and wasn't sure what happened to the owls. Then this afternoon there was a new young female in the nest box. We are just back in Florida for a few days so she may have been there for a week or so. Anyway good news and better late than never. I suspect Luna and Odie the parents for the past 4 seasons had expired or become too old to compete and this is probably one of the owlets from 2025, probably a first time mother so running late. Life is good!

A day trip to Whitewater Falls, the highest waterfalls east of the Rockies which was also teeming with butterflies this time of year, more on that later. The area is basically a rain forest. About an hour and a half from Asheville. Highly worth a visit. BB

All three Screech Owlets have fledged safely and are well. Thanks to all who took an interest in the owls and especially those who showed their support! The last owlet, Archer, left at sunrise this morning (5/4/25) and the owl nest box is now empty till next season. Aurora the second eldest left in the early hours of May 3rd and the eldest Athena left May 1st - exactly as I predicted! Mother Luna and Father Odie have done an awesome job this season even smoother than last season. This was their 4th season together which is a long time in the owl world so I don't know if we can expect both of them to make it back next winter, but I know they or their kids will return for the 14th season!

Mother Luna and Father Odie have done an awesome job this season. Its very active after dark when the food deliveries start!
