When playing online, it's easy to caught up in thinking you need the perfect map for the encounter ... and then spend time you don't have searching for (or drawing) the perfect map.

Or you could do what you'd probably do at the table ... which is wing it. This is a quick-and-dirty encounter map for Ken's lunchtime Shadowdark campaign. It's an encounter in a graveyard -- the big rectangles are are mausoleums; the little ones are graveyards. The grey lines represent the path; the thick gray bar at the top is the cemetery wall.

It took all of 15 minutes to throw together in Procreate (an iPad art app) though you could do the same with graph paper, take a picture of it, and then upload that to your virtual tabletop of choice.

New D&D / Fantasy RPG finds at Ollie's!

* The Game Master's Book of Instant Towns and Cities
* Heroes' Feast: The official D&D Cookbook

Each was $8.99. The "Game Master's" line is a solid collection of books; this one features lots of pre-generated locations, plus random charts for making (or detailing) more.

The Heroes' Feast cook book has lots of fantasy-themed recipes. Ken's thinking of using it more for fantasy menus in his games than actually cooking anything in the real world.

We love the graph view in Obsidian (this one is for Ken's Greyhawk '76 campaign).

We can't say that it's hugely useful from a game prep perspective, but we do love viewing it periodically to see how the connections have grown.
