Moving in the shadows -- I like tutorials but I want to create a game. Here's a glimpse at my new concept art for Fast Asleep, a short narrative RPG that takes place in the world of Lorelia.

DevLog will be coming I just want to make sure I can backlog some consistent videos!

For now enjoy the AI art (I'm not that creative but I'll try to take it into 3d)

For a while now, I’ve been calling myself a game developer but what exactly did I develop? There are thousands of games in my previous catalog that I’ve played and none of them resemble the sort of things I create. None of them give you that sense of wonder like the first time you go as a new Tauren and unwittingly enter The Barrens at level 4, none of them give you that fire that you get when you just got an all-headshot ace in your LEM promotion match, nothing of what I create gives you that feeling you know will come back as nostalgia in the upcoming years.

I have to ask myself, why? What am I missing? Yes, I create things in a game engine, and yes, they all tick the boxes. 3D Art? Check. Animations? Check. Game console or modality? Check. They’re all lacking something, I guess it would be called fun. I know we all have to pay the bills sometimes, but when you find yourself creating some nonsensical training in VR for the umpteenth time without ever creating something you wanted to in the first place, it’s a good time to reflect. I mean, I’ve had game ideas I’ve wanted to create since I was 5 or 6 years old. I learned this to make them a reality and then money happened. How are you supposed to make a living and create what you want to create?

This is a question that I don’t have the answer to. I’m trying like all of us to balance work, life, and desire. But it’s apparently clear that to get paid for creating your own game with your own vision, it’s just not likely whatsoever. I don’t want this all to be some sort of sappy pity party, believe me I’m getting somewhere.

I have to repeat this myself and I hope that it helps someone else. Find time, 10 hours, 4 hours, hell even 10 minutes a week to work on something to further your goals. If you want a job at a AAA game studio, work on building your portfolio, whether that’s through developing full-fledged games, maybe it’s designing some beautiful levels, or even just creating some interesting mechanics. If you want to create your own game studio, then work on a game. This is where I am. I want to create my own franchise. It will be hard, and I might get distracted, but the longevity of this idea is what pulled me forward to it.

Hopefully in the coming days, weeks, and months, I can keep my promise and update anyone who’s interested with more posts like this, devlogs, and maybe some image dumps. I hope to help others in the entire process of developing games at the same time as I am learning, so if I’m misguided about something let me know. I don’t pretend to know it all, but I do know I want to create something meaningful, lasting, and something that can evoke emotion.

I always like to get distracted. It's easy with a full-time job and a part-time YouTube channel to always veer off in another direction.

Right now I find myself passionate about an RTS, but I also want to make content for DevLogs. I feel like this would be slow, but maybe not. Would you guys want to see any DevLogs or just tutorials?
