President Bola Tinubu has arrived in Tokyo, Japan, ahead of the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9), where he is expected to join other African leaders, international partners, and global stakeholders to discuss Africa’s economic future.
The President’s aircraft touched down at the Presidential Wing of Haneda International Airport at 12:50 a.m. local time on Tuesday.
He was received by Ambassador Hideo Matsubara, Japan’s Ambassador in charge of TICAD at Haneda, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, and other officials of the Nigerian Embassy.
The three-day summit, scheduled to hold from August 20–22 at Pacifico Yokohama, is themed “Co-create Innovative Solutions with Africa.” It will focus on accelerating Africa’s economic transformation, strengthening institutions, and improving the business environment through private sector investment and innovation.
Discussions will also center on building a resilient and sustainable African society anchored on peace, stability, and human security.
TICAD, a triennial initiative of the Japanese government co-hosted with the United Nations, UNDP, African Union Commission, and the World Bank, alternates between Japan and Africa. The last edition was held in Tunisia in August 2022.
While in Japan, President Tinubu is expected to hold bilateral meetings and engage top executives of major Japanese companies with business interests in Nigeria.

Nigeria is in mourning following the announcement of the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR.
According to a statement signed by Garba Shehu, a longtime spokesperson of the former president, Buhari passed away this afternoon at a clinic in London.
The statement, issued on behalf of the family, did not disclose the cause of death.
The message read: “INNA LILLAHI WA INNA ILAIHIRRAJIUUN. The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin.”
Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1983 to 1985 and later as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023, was known for his anti-corruption stance and efforts to reposition Nigeria’s economy and security architecture.
Tributes are expected to pour in from across the country and the international community in the coming hours as Nigerians reflect on the life and legacy of the former leader.
