When the drumbeat of wrestling was first heard across our land, Appah Macauley stood among those who answered its call with courage. He was of the first generation of African champions Nigeria produced - a man who wrestled not only opponents, but history itself.
In 1984, in Egypt, he won gold for Nigeria. That same year, he walked onto the world’s greatest stage at the Los Angeles Olympics and placed fifth. He became the first Ijaw and Niger delta wrestler to win African gold, and the first to carry Ijaw pride to the Olympics. In traditional wrestling, he was feared and celebrated in equal measure. In the 80s and 90s, his name traveled faster than his footsteps. They called him the Water-Lion, and the name fitted the man.
After the Olympics, he came to Eniwari. I was only a boy then - wide-eyed, listening as one listens to tales by moonlight. He spoke of Egypt, of the Olympics, of flying across the ocean. To me, Egypt sounded like it was in heaven, and the Olympics like a gathering of the gods. In that moment, a seed was planted. I wanted to go to the Olympics. And that would mean me flying on a plane.
Years passed, as they always do, and the seed grew. That childhood wonder carried me to the Olympics myself. Olympic gold! Such is the quiet power of inspiration.
Appah Macauley was a pragmatist, a mentor, a man who understood the weight of legacy. Often, he reminded us that the wrestling family would bury him. He spoke without fear, because he had already made his mark.
On 24 December 2025, Appah Macauley joined the ancestors. My condolences go to his family and all who loved him. My condolences to the government and people of bayelsa state and also to the wrestling and sports family.
I remember him as a man who opened doors simply by walking through them first.
We will bury him as he deserves - a hero, an icon, a trailblazer. 16 January.
May the Water - Lion find rest where champions dwell.
May his story continue to teach us how greatness begins - with a dream, and the courage to pursue it.
Court Convicts Nnamdi Kanu on Terrorism-Related Charges
Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja has convicted Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), on offences related to belonging to a proscribed terrorist organisation and inciting his followers to violence.
Delivering his judgment in the ongoing terrorism trial, Justice Omotosho found Kanu guilty on counts three, four, and five of the seven-count charge brought against him by the Nigerian Government.
The judge held that the prosecution presented credible evidence showing that Kanu belonged to IPOB, which has been proscribed, as well as its affiliate security outfit, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).
He further ruled that the prosecution proved that Kanu, through multiple broadcasts, incited his followers to commit acts of violence that resulted in the killing of security personnel and the destruction of property, including police stations across the country.

Celebrating Unity and Tradition: King Oweipa Jones-Ere III's 66th Birthday and Chieftaincy Honors
As part of the activities marking his 66th birthday on July 29, 2025, the Ebenanaowei of Ogboin Clan of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, His Royal Majesty King Oweipa Jones-Ere III, conferred prestigious chieftaincy titles to worthy sons and daughters of Ogboin across various communities in the clan, including their Delta brothers and sisters. The royal celebration was held with great splendor in a colorful event that attracted high chiefs and royal majesties from within and outside the state.
The birthday celebrations featured a chant by High Chief Adolphus Munamuna, of the Bebe Yere Owei, and a pep talk titled "We're One Blood" by Mr. Betebekurogha Ambaiowei, President of the Ogboin Ebe Unity Forum (OEUF). A highlight of the celebrations was the conferment of chieftaincy titles on deserving sons and daughters of the great Ogboin Kingdom from the Amatolo, Otuan, and Amassoma communities in Bayelsa State, as well as from Uhweru and Ibedeni communities in Delta State.
Those honored with chieftaincy titles by HRM King Oweipa Jones-Ere III included Capt. Although their separation from their father's initial settlement was rooted in familial conflict, harmony and cordiality prevailed among them and their respective communities. This harmonious relationship has been maintained throughout history, fostering unity among the Ogboin people.
King Oweipa Jones-Ere, also known as Ogboin III, succeeded his late father, King Ayibatari Jones Ere, Ogboin II, who reigned for 25 years and was highly revered in both the former Rivers State and Bayelsa State. King Jones-Ere III commands authority and respect befitting the traditions and customs of the Ogboin Ebe.
On June 4, 2004, the first Executive Governor of Bayelsa State, His Excellency, Chief D.S.P. Alamieyeseigha, PhD, JP of blessed memory, along with then Vice President of Nigeria, His Excellency Abubakar Atiku, presented King Oweipa Jones-Ere with his staff of office.
Since his ascension, King Jones-Ere III has maintained peace and garnered the support and love of the independent communities and the Ogboin Ebe people as a whole. Among all the Kings of Ogboin, the incumbent King stands out for having brought the rulers of Uwheru and Ebedeni into the fold of Ogboin Clan's activities, awarding chieftaincy titles to prominent individuals from these diaspora communities, as witnessed during today's royal gathering.
Speaking to Erevision MediaTV shortly after receiving his chieftaincy title, Chief Ogbotimibofa Owens, FCA, the Adodo of Ogboin Clan, remarked: "This whole day is a day I never thought would come, but by providence, it has come to be, and I give the glory back unto our Lord the Maker in Jesus' name."
"Ogboin Clan is a clan of unity; it's a clan of togetherness. It's a clan from which other clans can learn. This unity is enduring, and I believe it will continue to endure," he concluded.

Governor Diri Lauds Hon. Rodney Ambaiowei for Exemplary Representation in the National Assembly
By Robinson Ere Erebi
The Executive Governor of Bayelsa State, Sen. Douye Diri, has commended Hon. Engr. Rodney Ebikebina Ambaiowei, the National Assembly member representing Southern Ijaw Federal Constituency, for his outstanding performance over the past two years in the House of Representatives.
Governor Diri expressed his commendation during a visit by a high-powered delegation of Southern Ijaw stakeholders, led by the National Chairman of PANDEF, Amb. Godknows Boladei Igali. The delegation visited the governor in his country home in Sampou on June 14, 2025, to express their gratitude for his support in the election of Hon. Rodney Ambaiowei and to highlight the positive projects he has initiated in the area.
The Bayelsa helmsman extended heartfelt appreciation to the delegation, which comprised representatives from various political parties, for acknowledging the developmental strides of his administration in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.
“People have been coming to say thank you. If I say nobody has been coming, it’s not true; a lot of people have come to express their gratitude, but I want to say that this visit stands out. I can see Southern Ijaw in its original entity—the crème de la crème of leaders across political parties,” he said.
“It gladdens my heart because that’s what I have been preaching since I assumed office—the unity and oneness we share as a people from this geographical entity. Not only from a geographical perspective, but also from an ethnic standpoint. Particularly for those of us from the old Yenagoa Local Government Area. We have worked together, we have shared good times and bad times together, making us a people who are one and the same. We’re inseparable. So I feel very, very happy to receive this caliber of leaders from Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.”
“I know that the Honourable has been working tirelessly for quite some time, and while some may think it’s late, it’s never too late to say ‘thank you.’ After Jesus Christ healed ten lepers, only one returned to express gratitude. In everything you do in this world, appreciation matters. Power itself is transient. We are in power today, tomorrow we may not be, and others will take our place. What stands out is the legacy we leave behind.”
“I appreciate you all for the unity that I am witnessing in Southern Ijaw today. Some of you are not based here in Yenagoa; you have come from far and near—some of you from Abuja, some from Lagos—to demonstrate that oneness. You are all here today to follow your son and express your gratitude. Let it also be with you,” Sen. Diri added.
Earlier in the visit, the leader of the delegation, Amb. (Dr.) Godknows Boladei Igali, conveyed the purpose of the visit. “This auspicious occasion is to thank the Governor for his unwavering support for our son. All political office holders from Southern Ijaw are here today to appreciate you for the love that has endured over the years and to thank you particularly for your assistance in his work in the National Assembly.”
“To thank you not just for finding him fit and proper for this role, but because you did not impose him on us. You recommended him based on your confidence in his abilities, encouraging us to vote for him. You personally campaigned for him town by town, leading to his landslide victory, and he has been representing us incredibly well.”
“Today, we thank you for bringing forth our son, Rodney Ambaiowei, from a noble family in Southern Ijaw. You stood by him amidst many interests and confidently said, ‘This young man, I know him. He’s an Engineer.’ He has served at both the state and federal levels and has performed remarkably well in the House of Representatives. We are here today to express our appreciation.”
“Your Excellency, Rodney has asked us to thank you and assure you that the A.S.S.U.R.E.D program of the Prosperity Government has enabled him to touch most communities in Southern Ijaw. He has documented his work, which we will present to you. More importantly, we come to greet you. Nua!” he said.
While presenting his "Mid-Term Stewardship Report for Southern Ijaw Federal Constituency" to Governor Douye Diri, Hon. Rodney Ebikebina Ambaiowei emphasized that the governor is not just a leader but also his father and mentor. “When I call him my mentor, he truly is. You can imagine someone who guided me through school and continues to mentor me today as I serve in the legislative house.”
“My father, the governor, taught me about government. Little did I know that two of the three organs of government would be held by him. I have nothing more to add but to assure you that I have no other leader in the Ijaw nation. You are my leader and mentor, and I will follow wherever you lead.”
“I started my political journey in 2003, contesting in the elections of 2003, 2007, 2011, 2015, and 2019. I never imagined that one day you would become governor and provide me this platform. I am here simply to express my gratitude. Even though my leader has thanked you profoundly, I am still here to say thank you. Nua!” he concluded.
The highlight of the occasion was the presentation of the "Mid-Term Stewardship Report for Southern Ijaw Federal Constituency" by Hon. Rodney Ebikebina Ambaiowei to Governor Sen. Douye Diri. The report details the projects successfully executed during his two years of legislative service to the people of Southern Ijaw Federal Constituency, garnering a standing ovation from attendees.
Diri Emerges as Chairman of South-South Governors Forum
Governors of the South-South geo-political zone have unanimously elected the Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, as the Chairman of the South-South Governors’ Forum.
Senator Diri was elected on Tuesday during the forum’s meeting at Government House in Yenagoa, the state capital.
Cross River Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, emerged as the Vice Chairman of the forum.
The Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, moved the motion nominating Diri, while his Rivers State counterpart, Siminalayi Fubara, seconded it.
In response, Diri stated that his election as chairman was a call to higher service and he pledged to serve the forum and the region diligently.
He emphasized that the role was not for him alone but a collective responsibility for all governors of the South-South to advance the region's progress.
Diri affirmed that the forum would go beyond merely issuing communiques and would take action on critical issues affecting regional development.
His words: “Working together, we have all resolved that our region will not fail. We have seen other regions progress while our region remained quiet.”
In his opening address, Diri outlined the objectives of the forum, which include fostering greater synergy among the states and advancing regional investments in critical sectors such as security, agriculture, education, power, environment, tourism, and youth empowerment through sports, ICT, and entrepreneurship.
He stressed the importance of speaking with one voice, especially in light of the rapidly evolving landscape of the country and the world at large.
Diri indicated that by leveraging the strengths and resources of each member state, targeted initiatives could be designed and implemented to promote sustainable development and prosperity.
He identified South-South regional flight connections as a key area of collaboration to facilitate air travel within the zone.
In their remarks, Governors Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom), Senator Bassey Otu (Cross River), Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta), and Siminalayi Fubara (Rivers) expressed appreciation to Diri for hosting the meeting and for setting a proactive agenda for the states to develop action plans and timelines on agreed-upon issues.
They noted that the meeting was long overdue and emphasized the need for cooperation among the states to build a vibrant economy independent of oil and gas revenue.
The governors also mentioned that speaking with a united voice would convey the appropriate message that the region deserves attention from the federal government.
According to the governors, previous meetings, particularly those under the auspices of the BRACED (Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Edo, and Delta) Commission, had not delivered the expected results. They expressed hope that under Diri's leadership, a new direction would be charted for the region, urging forum members to set aside political affiliations to achieve their goals.
In a communique, the governors expressed their support for the ongoing tax reforms of the President Bola Tinubu administration.
The communique, read by the Bayelsa governor, urged the president to extend the proposed VAT sharing to other areas of derivation, such as oil and gas.
They argued that the law on oil derivation stipulates a minimum of 13 percent, and the federal government should also consider increasing the derivation amount allocated to the states within the region.
The forum commended the president for awarding and initiating the coastal road project but requested that it also commence from the Calabar axis, highlighting that this would enhance connectivity and stimulate economic development in the region.
While thanking President Tinubu for the ongoing work on the East-West Road, the governors stressed the importance of expediting the work to ensure its early completion.
Other areas where the South-South governors called for federal government intervention included extending the ongoing remediation efforts in Ogoniland to other polluted environments in the region.
The forum expressed its readiness to establish a comprehensive and structured security network to enhance security in the region.
A highlight of the meeting was the celebration of the birthday of Rivers Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who turned 50 on Tuesday.
Listening to the People: A Call for Genuine Engagement in Southern Ijaw Federal Constituency
In the vibrant and dynamic polity of Southern Ijaw Federal Constituency, efforts to engage constituents and understand their needs are integral to effective leadership.
Recently, a notable voice calling for this engagement has emerged: Hon. Afro Mietoikumo Rufus Opuofoni, a critical stakeholder and the coordinator of the Rodney Ebikebina Ambaiowei Campaigns in Ward 3.
During a New Year celebration organized by Hon. Rodney Ambaiowei in Yenagoa, Opuofoni articulated a powerful message in a chat with Erevision MediaTV, urging the representative to consult with the people of Ward 3 to better understand their needs and aspirations.
Celebrating Togetherness
Hon. Opuofoni expressed her gratitude towards Hon. Rodney Ambaiowei for bringing the community together during the festive season, emphasizing the importance of unity. “Look at this season; some are indoors, you can't even go to their gates, but he made it possible for everyone to come to taste what the season is all about from him,” she stated. This sentiment captures the essence of thoughtful leadership—a leader who prioritizes connection with the community and fosters an environment of inclusivity.
The gathering showcased the diverse fabric of the constituency, with representation from all corners—North, South, East, and West. Such events not only strengthen community ties but also offer an invaluable opportunity for leaders to hear directly from their constituents.
Consulting the Community's Heart
Hon. Opuofoni stressed the importance of understanding the specific needs of Ward 3, which comprises six vibrant communities: Ikebiri, Korokorosei, Ondewari, Okpotuwari, Ikebiri II, andIOgbugbene. Her firm belief is that genuine engagement with the community will enable Hon. Ambaiowei to be a more effective representative. “I want him to consult the people of Ward 3 as our representative for him to be remembered tomorrow,” she urged. This call for action reflects a broader desire for representatives to venture beyond traditional political approaches and immerse themselves in their communities.
A Vision for the Future
Looking ahead to 2025, Hon. Opuofoni expressed optimism about the impact Hon. Ambaiowei can have on his constituents. She encouraged him to reflect on past efforts while striving for continuous improvement. “I know 2025; he’ll do better than 2024 a lot,” she affirmed, showcasing her faith in his visionary leadership. As we enter the new year, the significance of setting achievable goals based on community feedback becomes more pertinent.
Bridging the Gap
One of the central themes of Opuofoni's message is the need for Hon. Ambaiowei to bridge gaps in understanding among the constituents.
Hon. Afro Mietoikumo Rufus Opuofoni who is also the "Yimie-embelemoere 1 of Amassoma", a title confered on her by Hon. Rodney Ambaiowei, highlighted that while her perspective is valuable, it is crucial to gather a broader range of opinions to represent the diverse voices within Ward 3 accurately. “He should come to the people—the people he's representing—and know the desire of the people,” she stressed.
By fostering an inclusive dialogue, Hon. Ambaiowei can ensure that his initiatives are genuinely reflective of the community's aspirations.
Conclusion: Leadership in Action
As Southern Ijaw Federal Constituency moves forward into 2025, the call from Hon. Afro Mietoikumo Rufus Opuofoni resonates profoundly: effective leadership is rooted in understanding and engaging with the people one represents. Hon. Ambaiowei has displayed commendable initiative by organizing gatherings that foster connectivity, yet the next step is to delve deeper into the unique needs of Ward 3.
By doing so, he can transform goodwill into meaningful action, ultimately fostering a thriving and responsive community.
In this era of heightened engagement and expectation, may the leaders of Southern Ijaw take inspiration from this call to listen, consult, and act in accordance with the voices of their constituents. After all, true leadership is not merely about making promises but ensuring those promises resonate with the lived experiences and futures of the people.
