#Trauma can force a person to grow up quickly, neglect one’s own needs and often lose sense of their #identity. This was certainly Hoat’s experience, whose experience with domestic violence and #poverty caused her to put others’ needs before her own.

Hoat’s father, who was diagnosed with schizophrenia, physically and verbally abused her mother and her. One time he even tried to burn Hoat’s books and banish her from going to school.

Due to financial strain, Hoat left #school to work as a tailor, sacrificing her #education to help her family. Hoat wanted to help her family and stay in school. She longed to be with people her age and pursue her dreams, but worried about her mother and siblings’ #safety.

Fortunately, Hoat found #Hagar and provided with multiple services including case management and psychological counselling.

Bad memories of her father’s physical and verbal abuse haunted her but after a year of #support, Hoat has found the self-esteem and bravery she needed to #overcome her past.

With Hagar’s help, Hoat completed the KOTO training course where she soon made friends, was elected vice monitor of the class and was nominated as one of the top 5 students. It had been a long time since she had worn a uniform and wearing it made her feel strong, as if wearing armour to fight against her #fear and past wounds.

Hoat had this to say upon reflection on her journey.

“I never really thought about myself- who I was or what I wanted because I was scared. I have a #dream now. I was afraid my father’s criticism of me was true and I could not do anything better in my life. However, since connecting with Hagar, I understand more about myself and realise I am #capable. Thanks Hagar for the time you spent accompanying and #supporting me in the ups and downs. Thank you for always believing in me, even when I could not believe in myself. I am really grateful for your encouragement and promise to be more mature and #bold in 2023.”

‪@hagarvietnam‬ trained 55 #women on sustainable livelihood and financial management skills as part of a project funded by Home Credit Vietnam, supported by Hagar Hong Kong and run with assistance from the Women’s Union of Nghia Lo.

With assistance from the trainer, participants developed detailed action plans, based on business ideas from previous #training. They also learned about #money management and planning a family #budget, which gave them the #skills needed to accomplish their action plans.

Hagar Vietnam and the Women’s Union provided a capital #investment worth 10 million Vietnam Dong for all 55 participants. These #loans help #survivors establish a small livelihood #business plan and run their small-scale livelihood activities.

#Savings and loans groups established roles and responsibilities, regulations for being selected and repaying loans, and opportunities to learn household financial planning. This event also gave participants the opportunity to exchange their experience and establish their own self-help group for the future.

​‪@hagarvietnam‬'s ​Animal Bank’ project, aims to promote #healing and #change in the lives of #women affected by #trafficking, exploitation, or #abuse and reduce the number of human trafficking cases in the community.

63 vulnerable women and their #families, including at least 252 #children and other household members, were identified in the first phase of the project. After the assessment, the women were provided with a pair of female and male animals. Intensive animal husbandry and business skills development training was then conducted to support survivors in breeding and selling meat.

In December, 75 households in the Xa Ho, Ban Cong and Ban Mu 3 communes in Tram Tau district of the Yen Bai province received 118 goats and 72 pigs.

During the first year, Hagar staff, the Yen Bai Women’s Union and technical experts will mentor survivors. After, each family will give one male and one female animal to a communal “bank”, to be distributed to additional beneficiaries in the second year.

Hagar International's Global CEO, Andrew Catford recently visited our #Afghanistan Program Office where he interacted with some of the 130 #women currently benefitting from our ‘Restore Lives Through Livelihood’ initiative.

Part of the initiative is Hagar’s ‘Cash for Work’ programme that secured work for these women at a carpet weaving factory in Dashe Barchi, #Kabul in May this year. The women have commenced work and will be offered a permanent job after 6 months of paid training, enabling them to earn an income and support their families.

Today is International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (‪@unitednations‬) and here at Hagar we are celebrating our wins, like the peer groups we’ve established in Vietnam that have transformed families like Lan’s.



For years, Lan endured physical abuse at the hands of her husband as the stress of having a sole low income from farming provoked conflicts between them.



However, after joining the peer group run by ‪@hagarvietnam‬, the couple worked on their relationship and learned how to communicate in a healthy manner.



The peer group was cathartic for the pair as it enabled them to discuss their traumas in a safe space and seek advice separately from one another. It also taught them about gender equality, the law, drivers of violent acts, the impact of trauma on children and nonviolent communication.

Since joining the peer group, Lan has noticed big changes in her husband’s behaviour. For example, one day she came home from work to find a cooked meal lovingly made by her husband. This seemingly small act was so significant to Lan that it brought her to tears.

Dat has also gained so much from the program, such as the knowledge that violence can not only be physical but verbal and emotional as well. He has even become a mentor for other male members of the peer group, inspiring them to change their mindset and behaviours.

Things changed so dramatically for the pair that they were open and happy to welcome a second child to their family, after 10 years. Their baby boy has brought love and laughter to the family.

Hagar also helped the family financially by providing them with a pair of cows. One of the cow’s had a baby and this calf is now an extra addition to the family!

We are so proud of this couple’s journey and our peer groups which are helping to prevent and eliminate violence against women at the source.
