Here’s the second part of “Stuck in a Terrible Job?” from the archive.
If you watched the first video earlier in this series of posts, this continues the discussion. If you missed it, you can start there and then come back to this one.

Where do you stand? What supports you? These familiar expressions lead into some of the territory we explore in Metaphors of Movement Level 3. We’ll examine the structure of the metaphor as a whole. Online, 21–25 September 2026, for those who have completed Levels 1 and 2.

A conversation can contain plenty of words and very little contact.
You explain what is troubling you. The reply picks up a minor detail, takes a detour, and somehow the original point disappears. Anyone who has experienced this repeatedly will recognise the frustration.
My article on tangential communication looks at this pattern through the work of Ruesch and Bateson, with examples from everyday conversation.

“Stuck in a terrible job.”
A familiar phrase, and the starting point for this video from the archive. If work has become something you describe in those terms, you may be interested in revisiting it with me. This is the first of two videos.

What does it mean to be immersed in something?
In this video from the archive, I look at immersion metaphors, including boundaried and unboundaried immersions and their relationship to containers. It’s another route into the structures we describe through metaphor.

I’ve brought together my teaching on submodalities, language patterns and different presentations of depression in Depression – A Neurolinguistic Perspective.
It’s a two-hour recording with supporting materials for further professional study. The recording is available on its own, separate from the Anxiety programme.
You can read the full outline and see the recording options here:

“Trust the process.” “Don't be negative.” “You're overthinking it.”
Some familiar phrases are remarkably good at ending a discussion before it has begun. The interesting part is what happens to the question that prompted them. Does it ever get answered?
I've written about thought-terminating clichés, how they work, and why context matters when apparently reassuring language closes down enquiry.
