Without intelligence, it is impossible to understand anything properly. Everything should be judged intelligently on its own merits, and not on baseless assertions or secondhand opinions. If one does not make an effort to discover truth beneath any and all perplexing veils, then one will never even know his own real nature and will remain the sport of outside forces and the slave of circumstance. Contempt for anything, without investigation, is the sign of a deluded man who will come to grief.

Send your thoughts of love and goodwill to your loved ones as often as you feel inclined to do so, but at least once a year — perhaps on some special anniversary. Mentally tell them, “We will meet again sometime and continue to develop our divine love and friendship with one another.” If you send them your loving thoughts continuously now, someday you will surely meet them again. You will know that this life is not the end, but merely one link in the eternal chain of your relationship with your loved ones.

The joy of God-communion, once tasted, is more tempting than all mundane temptations. If man tempts himself with that true pleasure, the temptation of the senses will wane. I have always prayed, “Lord, why don’t You reveal Yourself in the very beginning and then there will be no suffering from seeking pleasure in harmful actions?” Because God is the supremely charming experience, it is only when man does not have that comparison that evil temptation has power. Would anyone eat rotten cheese if he had good cheese? Would anyone prefer suffering to joy? No. Man yields to temptation because of the delusion that it will bring happiness. Criminals think they will get happiness from money they steal; but they find that crime does not pay. Neither does succumbing to the temptations of the senses.

My task is to take all kinds of people for training and help. It is not good to set a limitation on any human being, confining his possibilities to a certain analysis; but whether he changes or remains the same, intuition will be able to tell you, more than your diagnosis of the eyes, feelings, or physical features, whatever the nature of that person is. Intuition is the greatest analytical power. As a mirror reflects all things held before it, so when your mind-mirror is calm, you will be able to see reflected in it the true quality of others. If you are busy doing good to all, remaining calm and meditative, the true character of whoever comes to you will be revealed to you.

If we believe that God is just — I certainly do, and all great religions teach this — then what can be the cause of children with birth defects, who seem to have come into the world to suffer? God loves every one of us equally; and just as He cares for each sparrow, and is aware of each grain of sand, He cares far more for us. So there is no reasonable answer to this question except the law of karma, cause and effect: What you sow, you reap.

This does not mean that we should be hard-hearted toward the afflicted, saying, “Well, this suffering is his karma.” No! God gave human beings the ability to be sympathetic, to be compassionate. No other creature has those qualities. But God gave them to us, expecting us to use them as exemplified by Christ and other great spiritual giants.

According to spiritual science, the attitude of the mind is everything. It is sensible to conquer extreme heat by the use of artificially cooled air, and extreme cold by artificially produced warmth; but while trying to conquer discomfort externally, train the mind to remain neutral to every condition. Mind is just like blotting paper, which readily takes on the color of any dye you apply to it. Most minds take on the color of their environment. But there is no excuse for the mind to be defeated by outer circumstances.

This realization may take time, but we must begin with the right method, rather than gamble with the unscientific beggary of prayers and consequently be subject to disbelief, doubts, or the jugglery of superstition. It is only when the slumbering ego perceives itself not as a body, but as a free soul or son of God, residing in and working through the body, that it can rightfully and lawfully demand its divine rights.
