Suffering, created by your wrong living, is the call of God. When you suffer, it is a reminder not to stray from the heavenly consciousness of your true divine nature. But you should not need painful reminders. God prefers that you instead heed the call of wisdom. Realize that even though today you are so filled with life, enjoying the world around you, sooner or later you will suddenly be snatched away by death. Nothing in the world will be able to bring you back. Why wait until it is too late to reflect on the purpose for which you are here? You are not an animal; you have the power to think and reason and plan; and that power you must use to find God.

Like an insistent child, constantly call to the Divine Mother until She says: “All right, what is it you want?” She is so busy with creation, She doesn’t reply at once; but to the naughty child who cries and cries for Her, She will come.

The Divine Mother is most anxious to have you back with Her, but first you must prove to Her that you want Her alone. You must cry urgently and unceasingly; then She smiles and is with you instantly. Divine Spirit has no partiality; the Mother loves all. But Her devotees appreciate Her love, respond to Her love. I see the effect on people who have gained a little human love, or a little money — how happy they are! But if they could see what strength, what joy, what love is in the Divine Mother, they would fly away from all else.

The brain is the sensitive instrument of the mind, and all the sensations of the body are reported to the mind through the nerves and the brain. The mind, being identified with the brain, receives and interprets these sensations. A mind made strong by the practice of powerful and positive thinking is less affected by sensations of pleasure and pain. Never expect Him to come simply because you have meditated a certain number of years. Just say, “I know I am poor, Lord. Before You I am very little. Still, You made me Your child. I am following Your law of meditation and right action; but I know You are above the law, and it is for You to reveal Yourself when You wish to do so.” He does not grant that final revelation until the time is right and He is sure of your love, but He does give measure for measure. If you eat chilies, they will give you a certain sensation of heat. So it is with devotion. The joy that you find in devotion is the responding presence of God. Behind every thought you think of God, there is the call of God. And if you constantly fan the flickers of that desire for Him until it becomes ever-burning devotion, He will come. Never be discouraged, for He will come. Do not care how long it takes. Delay will only heighten the joy of your ultimate meeting with Him. When at last the saints conquer, the pain and suffering they went through as necessary for purification are forever forgotten the instant they make contact with God.
