I could make myself “crazy” this minute thinking of all I have to do for this work. But there is a time for everything. My time with God comes first. “I am ready to do everything for You, Lord, working day and night; but my happiness lies in my contact with You.” I remain in His astral kingdom. That is my home. I am living on the earth just as a servant lives and works in the house of his employer: I know my home is elsewhere.

The Wisdom of Yogananda

To develop mental imaging, I used to sit in a room and concentrate on visualizing everything in another unseen room, until my immediate surroundings disappeared and I was seeing in exact detail everything in the other room. By practice, develop proficiency in visualization (concentrating the mind’s eye on what you wish to achieve) and devisualization (banishing any images that distract from what you are concentrating on). These powers of imagination — used together with the power of will, power of inner silence, power of concentration and opening of the spiritual eye — will lead you to the astral realm and increased ability to manifest your thoughts in material form.

You should pray to God intimately, as His child, which you are. God does not object when you pray from your ego, as a stranger and a beggar, but you will find that your efforts are limited by that consciousness. God does not want you to give up your own will power, which is your divine birthright as His child.

This is the easiest way of determining your own spiritual progress. If you find yourself floating down the current of custom and opinions of others, the first step is to make time to get away from everybody. You don’t have to retire into the jungle; nor do you have to be rude to others. Just sit quietly and think. Have it out with yourself. Tell yourself that you are going to allow no one to hurt you or take away your happiness and peace.

Stay more by yourself. Remember, the only real happiness is in meditation. And the proof is obtainable by you. If you meditate the Self-Realization way for two or three hours at night, and then sing and talk to the Lord, undismayed if there is no answer, suddenly a divine light will come. Mysteriously, a fragrance will come. This is the way God lets you know that He is near. But you must be persistent, until He Himself comes. Then you will never fear anything anymore.

Let no one tell you that anything else is better than God’s joy. All men seek happiness, but do they find it? Meditation, long and deep, is the way to attain true joy. Nothing else can compare to meditation. Don’t be satisfied with a little silence. Go on endlessly. It must be a relentless pursuit, day and night meditating. When you are in His joy, sleep doesn’t matter.

Remind yourself always, no matter what comes, “I have the power to succeed. And though the conscious mind is conditioned to my environment, the Lord has given me unlimited power in the superconscious mind and the subconscious mind. As I begin to control them, I shall be able to control my destiny.” There is no jinx in your destiny except in lack of application of the powers of your conscious mind, and in the bad habits ingrained in your subconscious mind. You must never be discouraged; to be discouraged is to admit failure, to trademark yourself with failure. If your conscious mind says,“I can’t do it,” the subconscious mind records that failure thought; and the more you think negatively, the deeper you drive that failure idea into the library of your subconscious mind. Then you are done for — unless you again make the conscious effort to do away with the persistent conviction of failure by taking positive steps to think and act with a confident will.
